The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered is now available for purchase, with the PS5 exclusive debuting to nothing short of stellar reviews. PlayStation thus came out of the gates swinging in 2024, though it remains to be seen whether the company manages to follow up on this success in the immediate future.

Much like the inaugural entry in the franchise, The Last of Us 2 was released to critical acclaim at the tail end of its target platform's life cycle. With a new Sony console already in sight by that time, Naughty Dog promptly went to work on a remastered edition of the game that takes advantage of the PS5 hardware in order to deliver an even better version of its renowned title.

Some newly emerged evidence suggests that Microsoft is presently in talks to bring a major PlayStation console exclusive to Xbox.

The company managed to do just that, at least if the first wave of The Last of Us 2 Remastered review scores is any indication. Specifically, the game currently boasts an average rating of 90 (out of 100) on Metacritic, based on 90 reviews. That figure puts it above The Last of Us Part 1, the widely-praised remake of the original game whose PS5 version has an 88 average score on Metacritic.

Delving into the reasoning behind these excellent ratings, dozens of reviewers praised The Last of Us 2 Remastered for improving on the 2020 hit with the addition of DualSense support and better graphics, as well as a variety of new content, including a trio of the so-called Lost Levels that were cut from the original. No Return, the roguelike survival mode that's another brand-new addition to the game, has been praised as one of the best parts of The Last of Us 2 Remastered, not least because of the sheer amount of longevity that it adds to the overall package.

Given the series' immense track record, a 90 review score average places The Last of Us 2 Remastered as only the fourth best-rated release from Naughty Dog's post-apocalyptic franchise. But that just goes to show how the Sony subsidiary keeps pumping one generational hit after another instead of being an indictment of its latest game's qualities.

Since this remaster is priced at $49.99, $20 less than a typical AAA title for the PS5, it is a compelling proposition for anyone who hasn't yet played the original. But even those who did might find buying it to be a no-brainer decision, as upgrading to the PS5 version of The Last of Us Part 2 only costs $10.
