Fans have been anxiously awaiting The Last of Us Part 2 news for quite some time now, as there haven't been any major updates on the game in quite some time. However, Sony finally revealed some new information during the company's State of Play today, and it should get fans excited for the game.

PlayStation showed off a healthy new look at the game, which included a few snippets of gameplay as well as some story content. It appears that Ellie will be embarking on a quest for revenge this time around, as she seeks to destroy members of the group responsible for killing her girlfriend. It's the first trailer players have gotten of the game since the Last of Us Part 2 E3 2018 gameplay trailer.

Not only do players get an extended look at the game, but Naughty Dog and PlayStation have finally shown off Joel in the game, who has now aged to look a fair bit more like a grandfather than he did in the last entry. However, it is a bit strange that Ellie simply happens across him in the wasteland, and it seems possible that he is just a figment of her imagination. The Last of Us Part 2 is supposed to be larger than many thought possible, which is an exciting sentiment, and a possible indication that there is more to Joel than meets the eye. Fans will just have to wait to find out when the game releases.

All in all, the game looks to be an even more brutal portrayal of the post-apocalyptic United States than the first Last of Us game was. Throughout the trailer, the violence seems to be turned up to 11, indicating that this likely won't be a casual stroll through the world. There will likely be quite a few narrative beats that cause fans to grimace, though that is, arguably, what people were looking for in the first place.

PlayStation also finally revealed The Last of Us Part 2's release date. Players will finally be able to get their hands on the game on February 21st, 2020, unless the game is delayed. It isn't that long of a wait, but there are still plenty of anxious fans waiting to experience all that it has to offer. Who knows, maybe there will even be a port on the PlayStation 5 eventually. It seems like it would be a missed opportunity to not take advantage of the better hardware.

The Last of Us Part 2 will release for the PlayStation 4 on February 21st, 2020.
