The Flash movie will introduce audiences to Sasha Calle's Supergirl, and Mattel released a Supergirl Barbie doll to commemorate the upcoming film. In a social media post, Calle shared her reaction to the Supergirl Barbie doll and posted a video of herself playing with the figure.
The Flash follows Ezra Miller's Barry Allen as he travels to the past to prevent his mother's murder. However, his decision traps him in an alternate universe where metahumans don't exist, and Michael Shannon's General Zod remains a threat to Earth. To defeat Zod and return to his home universe, The Flash enlists the help of an alternate version of himself, Calle's Supergirl, and Michael Keaton's Batman.
Per Mattel's official description of the Barbie doll, Kara Zor-El arrived on Earth to search for a missing Kryptonian. However, she instead became the hero the world needs, taking on the Supergirl mantle. "There’s a barbie that looks like me.. I don’t know how to act," Calle wrote. "I’ve been taking her everywhere.. flying around and imagining laser eyes haha. Abrazos enormes. Todavía no me la creo. x." In a video included in the post, Calle is seen making the Supergirl Barbie "fly" alongside a Batmobile toy. While there is no audio in the video, Calle is seen laughing after making the cape appear as if it's blowing in the wind by moving it herself.
While Calle appears enthusiastic about the role, her future as Supergirl after The Flash remains unknown. Shortly after James Gunn was enlisted to develop a rebooted DC Universe for Warner Bros., he announced plans to introduce a new version of Superman and Batman. However, the fates of Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman, Miller's The Flash, and Jason Momoa's Aquaman remain a mystery, as standalone projects for these heroes were not included in Gunn's initial DC slate. Consequently, it's currently unclear which heroes from the outgoing DC Extended Universe will remain part of Gunn's DCU and which ones will be cast aside when The Flash soft reboots the on-screen DC franchise.
A Supergirl TV series with Keaton's Batman and a solo movie for Kara were once rumored to be part of DC's plans. However, updates on those projects were limited even before Gunn took over the DC film division. Complicating the situation are Miller's legal troubles, which have some fans wondering if Warner Bros. will decide to cast a new actor for The Flash and move forward without the supporting characters from the Scarlet Speedster's upcoming film. Furthermore, Gunn and Warner Bros.' have been coy when asked if Miller's Barry Allen, Calle's Supergirl, or any other characters from The Flash will be brought into the new DC universe.
After The Flash is released, Warner Bros. and DC may search for a new actor to play Supergirl in Gunn's DC Universe. However, Calle's enthusiasm for the role endeared her to fans before The Flash premiered worldwide. If her performance matches her excitement, fans may call on Warner Bros. to bring Calle back for Gunn's standalone Supergirl movie.
The Flash is scheduled to be released in theaters on June 16, 2023.
