The long-running CW show The Flash has been given a premiere date for its 9th and final season, coming to an end in the aftermath of the CW’s acquisition by Nexstar, which sees the futures of several other shows hanging in the balance.

Kicking off in 2014 and based on the DC Comics character of the same name, CW’s The Flash follows Barry Allen, a mild-mannered crime-scene investigator who is granted superhuman speed by an explosion at a nearby laboratory, making him the fastest man alive and inspiring him to create the mantle of The Flash and fight crime in Star City. Over the course of almost a decade on air, the show has seen Barry fight some of the character’s most iconic villains and several others as well. The Flash has been quite successful and enjoys a lot of fan love, ranking as one of the highest-rated Arrowverse shows and even eclipsing the extended universe’s titular Arrow series in popularity.

It was announced back in August that The Flash would come to an end after its ninth season, and now the premiere date for the last season has been officially set by the CW. Brad Schwartz, President of Entertainment at The CW, released a statement (via TVLine) in which he said, "The Flash will be remembered as one of the greatest shows in the history of The CW, and everyone involved in its excellent nine-season run should be very proud. The team has delivered an epic final season, filled with plenty of twists, guest stars and surprises that will delight every fan. Now is the time to catch up and enjoy this fantastic final ride alongside the fastest man alive.”

The final season is set to be a big one filled with action and intrigue, with the logline revealing that “...when a deadly group of Rogues descends on Central City led by a powerful new threat, The Flash and his team… must once again defy impossible odds to save the day. A deadly new adversary rises to challenge Barry Allen’s heroic legacy. And in their greatest battle yet, Barry and Team Flash will be pushed to their limits, in order to save Central City one last time.” There’s little reason to believe that the show will struggle to deliver on such an ambitious premise for the curtain call, as the creative freedom to pull it off is all. The show has changed many things from the comics, with relatively minimal complaints from the fan base.

With the final bow coming up for The Flash, it seems likely that another show will have to take on the role of Arrowhead for the all-but-concluded Arrowverse. The answer is glaringly obvious, as fans have been mulling over whether or not Superman and Lois could be the center of the Arrowverse. However short-lived that run might be, the legacy that The Flash and the other Arrowverse shows leave behind will be massive.

The final season of The Flash will begin to air on the CW in February 2023.
