The Finals is currently outdoing Call of Duty on Steam in terms of concurrent players by a notable margin. Created by Embark Studios, The Finals was recently shadow dropped at The Game Awards, after a hugely successful open beta that drew in over 7.5 million players.

The Finals is a unique blend of a class-based shooter with extraction elements, along with some unique additions of its own. Created by a team that comprises ex-DICE developers, the game allows players to destroy the environment to their advantage, similar to Battlefield 2042. It also offers a fast-paced competitive shooter experience and has been pegged by several players as the next big esports title. So far, the community’s sentiment towards the game has been largely positive, considering the developers had to set a login queue during The Finals’ open beta to limit the massive influx of players. Now, just five days after its launch on Steam, it is already surpassing established titles.

The Finals Debuts to Big Player Count Numbers But Mixed Reviews [UPDATE]

First-person shooter game The Finals releases to huge player count numbers on Steam, but it is suffering from mixed user reviews.

According to the data on Steam Charts, The Finals currently has more than 155,000 active players, beating the likes of Call of Duty, GTA 5, and Baldur’s Gate 3. Interestingly, The Finals had a peak player count of 242,399 whereas Call of Duty peaked at 190,273, which is a notable difference. At the time of writing, The Finals is among the top five games on Steam with the highest number of active players. Considering the sheer competition in the multiplayer FPS genre, The Finals moving up the ranks during its early phase provides a massive boost to the developers.

  1. Counter-Strike 2: 707,628
  2. Dota 2: 434,393
  3. The Finals: 158,699
  4. Baldur's Gate 3: 149,766
  5. PUBG: Battlegrounds: 149,655

Despite posting great numbers, The Finals received mixed reviews following its Steam launch. Several fans complained about its movement feeling sluggish compared to the open beta; however, developers mentioned that The Finals’ movement speed hasn’t been tweaked at all, which left the fans perplexed. They further clarified that the possible speed reduction could be a result of the tweaks made to the game’s animations and sounds. Another reason behind this could be the FOV slider which was set to 71 by default following the 1.0 release, which could “have a huge impact on how the game feels”, according to the devs. Consequently, the team has mentioned that it is actively working to rebalance some of the changes and will have an update soon.

The Finals offers a unique multiplayer experience by combining several genres, but it still has a long way to go. Fans have expressed their disappointment with the use of AI voices in The Finals, and have pointed out several other changes the developers can implement to improve the gameplay experience. Even then, the community feels that it has the potential to become a great game and should be one to look out for.
