The Evil Within 2 debuted at E3 2017 with a stunning trailer that bombarded players with a whirlwind of horrific scenes. However, some viewers may have been left scratching their heads as to what was going on, and while Bethesda insists that it's possible to jump right into the sequel without having played the first game, the company has cobbled together a story FAQ that explains how the two stories are connected.

Before reading on to discover how The Evil Within 2 connects to the original, please note that this article will contain spoilers for the first game.

The connections to the original will be apparent right from the start of The Evil Within 2. The game begins with Sebastian Castellanos still reeling from the events of the first game, now struggling with alcoholism. Sebastian eventually discovers that his daughter Lily, who he believed to be dead, is being used by the mysterious Mobius organization to create a STEM world – a hellish landscape that is accessible through the STEM device.

Sebastian willingly goes to the STEM world, called Union in this game, in an attempt to rescue his daughter. Sebastian is aided by Juli Kidman, a Mobius double agent who was responsible for subjecting Sebastian to the STEM world in the first game. The inclusion of Kidman's character is another way that The Evil Within 2 will connect to the original, and fans can look forward to learning more about her, as they did in The Assignment and The Consequence DLC.

With returning characters and the continued conflict with Mobius, it's clear how The Evil Within 2 connects to the events of the first game. However, what's unclear is just how much more players will learn about the Mobius organization in the sequel, and if some of the loose plot threads from the first game will reach their conclusion.

Anyone that wants to know what happens next in The Evil Within 2's twisted storyline will have to wait until this October to get their hands on the game.

The Evil Within 2 will launch on Friday, October 13th for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
