After being reincarnated into a fantasy world as Cid Kagenou, Cid gains an elder sister who serves as the pride of the Kagenou family in The Eminence in Shadow. As he always stays in the background to perfectly embody his background character, Claire shines way brighter than him. Moreover, Claire is stronger than the average knight, making her family even more proud.

During the Goddess Trial episode of the first season of The Eminence in Shadow, the Witch of Calamity, Aurora, made her appearance. While she was heavily hinted to be the Demon Diablos, few people know that. As the Witch of Calamity, Aurora has once again been portrayed during the Red Moon incident in Lawless City; however, this time around, she has a vessel in which she manifests.

The Witch Of Calamity And Shadow’s Sister

Claire Receives The Mark

Aurora, the Witch of Calamity, is called so because she is said to bring ruin wherever she goes. In truth, Aurora has lived for many years and is actually the Demon Diablos, although she claims to not remember much of her past due to amnesia. As the Witch of Calamity, Aurora leaves up to her name with her immense power. She can be said to rival Shadow in power, as the Goddess Trial summoned her to fight against Shadow. Although her projection at the trial was defeated, Shadow himself claimed that the projection lacked the true power of the original. Moreover, Aurora is capable of using atomic magic, Shadow’s sure-kill skill.

Of the many women that flock around Cid Kagenou, his sister Claire is someone he protects. Right from a young age, Cid has been looking after his sister and even healing her symptoms of demon possession without her notice. While Claire is seemingly always looking after and ‘protecting’ Cid, fans truly know what goes on in the background. After forcing Cid to accompany her to Lawless City, Claire comes across the Ancient Vampire Hunter Elizabeth, and during the duo’s battle with Elizabeth, Claire gets possessed by Aurora, joining their fate.

The Possessed And The Possessor

Statue of the 3 heroines

Early on in the series, ‘The Possessed’ were introduced as descendants of the Three Heroes who struck down and killed the Demon Diablos. These Three Heroes were cursed by the Demon right before they extinguished it. The curse was so that the descendants of the Three Heroes would be possessed with rotten bodies.

As a supposed descendant of the Three Heroes, Claire was a demon-possessed whose flesh was rotting. Cid curing her didn’t take away her demon blood but stopped it from rotting. However, after Mary, the Vampire Hunter, drank from Claire’s blood, she vampirized it, and the two different bloods within Claire began to act out. Aurora then appeared in Claire’s mind as she explained her unique situation to her. She then explained how the blood of vampires and the blood of the demon-possessed are of the same origin, but the blood of vampires adapted, mutated, and split off from the main branch. Meanwhile, the reason Aurora was able to take Claire as her vessel is because Claire is a descendant of Aurora. As Aurora is highly hinted to be the Demon Diablos, it shows that Claire may not truly be a descendant of the Three Heroes but of Diablos. Moreover, Claire is demon-possessed, like a lot of other people that the cult is after. And so, this brings up the question: are all demon-possessed descendants of the demon Diablos and not the Three Heroes? Or were the Three Heroes themselves demon-possessed individuals whose true history and origin have been altered?

Why Did The Witch Of Calamity Choose Claire?

Aurora

Apart from being a descendant of the Witch of Calamity, the reason Aurora decided to inhabit Claire and use her as her vessel is because she is Shadow’s sister. Upon their first meeting, Aurora highly hinted to Claire that she was only helping Claire because ‘that person’ deeply cares about her. Aurora then implied that ‘that person’ had always looked after her, right from when she was young, but Claire failed to get the hint. Claire was only concerned about who Aurora was and why she was in her mind. During the fight against the Blood Queen, Claire, Mary, Beta, numbers 664, 665, and 666 were on the verge of death. To protect Claire, Aurora temporarily possessed her to stall for time until Shadow arrived. She proved to be powerful enough to take down Elizabeth; however, Claire’s body was unable to withstand her true power. After the battle, a mark appeared on Claire’s hand, signaling that she is now the host of Aurora.

What Impact Would This Relationship Have On The Series?

Claire, Beta and Mary

The relationship between Claire and Aurora is sure to turn out to be an intriguing aspect of the series. As a vessel of Aurora, Claire and Aurora can communicate telepathically through each other’s minds, much like how Itadori and Sukuna from the Jujutsu Kaisen anime series can communicate. However, the difference is that Aurora bears no ill will towards Claire, but Claire sees her as a parasite as Aurora begins to interfere in Claire’s daily life. At the very least, with Aurora by her side, Claire has gained a powerful combatant that will allow her to survive what would normally be dire straits. While Claire is not powerful enough to unleash Aurora’s full power, what she can unleash is substantial, as seen with Aurora being able to battle and overwhelm Elizabeth, even if for a short time.
