Over the years, survival games have continued to be a popular genre of games for players to enjoy, especially whenever it involves zombies. The Day Before, from Russia-based indie developer Fntastic, mixes the survival and zombie genres within a new massively multiplayer online experience. The Day Before is already gaining some popularity as the anticipation builds for the game's possible launch this year, especially with the amount of player freedom Fntastic is describing for the game.

While it features some of the same tropes commonly found in dystopian genres, The Day Before is already different than games like The Last of Us when it comes to zombie games. Since The Day Before is being developed as an MMO, it will incorporate many other players with their own motivations into the mix. The game is set in a post-pandemic America where flesh-eating, infected humans are running amok. From these zombies to enemy players, there are numerous conflicts that players will have to handle. Thankfully, The Day Before already has a helpful place for players to stop: the survivor colonies.

Survivor Colonies Are The Day Before's Player Hubs

abandoned city street

In The Day Before, a survival colony basically functions as a player hub city of sorts that one could find in many other MMOs. These areas are safe zones, and will be the main places where player will be able to buy items or sell the loot they have collected during their travels. Survival colonies will also be the places where players can meet up with other players, to cooperate with them or form groups together. Aside from player characters, there will also be plenty of NPCs around these areas, too. Some of these NPCs are said to give out quests for the player to complete, but talking around will end up revealing more details about the game world to players.

Throughout their adventures, players will definitely run into the pitfalls of The Day Before being a survival game. Some factors directly relate to zombies, like how loud noises such as gunfire or running attracts the attention of nearby infected creatures. Other factors relate to The Day Before incorporating weather cycles, with sudden snowstorms causing health issues with the player after a certain period of time. On the bright side, survivor colonies should be safe zones to avoid bad weather, zombie hordes, and even aggressive enemy players.

In one of the few trailers for The Day Before revealed so far, the player actually hears a radio transmission from the Woodbury Survivor Colony revealing information about where they are. It seems that players will be able to receive information about different survivor colonies through different means, and radio messages could sometimes describe what is available at them. The developers also expect the survivor colonies to feature some sort of reputation system, which would affect NPCs' perception of the player and player progression in the story. Interestingly enough, the developers also stated an anticipated post-game content update could involve "concerts" in a survivor colony, but didn't elaborate on how that would work.

Unfortunately, details are still skim for The Day Before, and the function of survivor colonies could still change during the game's development. Fntastic is also drip-feeding new images and video clips to fans of the game, but hasn't revealed any in-depth information yet for the game. Fans just have to wait hopefully for more news, maybe even of a possible beta phase or Early Access release for The Day Before. Even though Fntastic may have a slightly rough developer track record, with the help of publisher MYTONA and the drive to make an amazing game, The Day Before could be something truly special.

The Day Before is in development for PC.
