Even though his character had been ousted from Vought International, Giancarlo Esposito believes that The Boys fans have not seen the last of the utterly professional albeit ruthless Stan Edgar.
Esposito, who recently won the Critics Choice Award for his portrayal of Gus Fring on Better Call Saul, revealed that because of the kind of show that The Boys is, he believes that Edgar will make his return to the show in its upcoming season. However, it remains to be seen what kind of role Edgar would play now that he's no longer with Vought.
In a mailbag from Matt Webb Mitovich of TVLine, Mitovich revealed what Esposito told him about the prospect of Edgar returning to the show. “I find The Boys to be a very creepy, interesting, edgy, and sick show — in the best way possible. It’s genius. And… I won’t string it out anymore: I think there is a great chance,” Esposito told Mitovich. Esposito doesn't sound like he's speaking in hypotheticals. He sounds as though it's a certainty his character will be back, even though he has not been seen since The Boys season 3, episode 4, and didn't get much mention afterward.
The Boys has brought back characters, whether they were dead or alive, like Madelyn Stillwell, and plans to bring back other characters, like Simon Pegg as Hughie's Dad, for the upcoming season. So, bringing Edgar back feels almost like a given knowing how important he was, especially since Edgar is the only person in the world besides Billy Butcher who does not fear Homelander in the slightest. The real question is how long it will take to bring him back. Homelander now has complete control over Vought and is conspiring to get Supes into congress through Edgar's protégé Victoria. If Edgar returns, how will he factor into it?
No matter what kind of role he plays should he come back, Edgar's dynamic with Homelander makes for one of the more fascinating ones in The Boys, and that's saying something. Not only does Edgar not fear Homelander - or anyone else for that matter - but he has never refrained from being upfront with the world's most powerful superhero. Whether he's telling Homelander that he's not the focal point of Vought or that he's a bad product, Edgar knows what Homelander's weakness is: insecurity, which he expertly uses against him. Both sides know that Homelander can kill Edgar without a second thought, but what Homelander wants more than anything is Edgar's approval. Edgar will never give him that satisfaction, even if it kills him.
That's why Edgar's possible role in The Boys could be very critical. One way or the other, the show is building up to a potential downfall for Vought, the Supes, and/or Homelander. Edgar went with the tide at first because he ran the ship, but now that he no longer has that job, there's nothing to stop him from destroying the foundation he built, which later turned on him. Since he knows what can trump Homelander, he should certainly know what can trump Vought.
