Fans of superhero gore-fest The Boys are already quite accustomed to lots of blood on-screen. In fact, many of them seem to be of the mind that the more blood there is, the better the show is overall. Well, apparently series creator Eric Kripke and the rest of his team took that as a challenge, as a recent interview with one of the show's stars confirmed that The Boys' currently in-production 3rd season will be way bloodier than its predecessors. Literally 3 times bloodier.

Laz Alonso, who plays the uniquely-named character Mother's Milk on The Boys, spoke about the highly anticipated follow-up to the surprisingly cathartic (especially for all the wonderful people who really needed to see a Nazi like Stormfront get beaten up by 3 superpowered women) season 2. Fans will likely remember just how bloody that season was, with a surprising amount of exploding heads, even for a show that has more exploding heads than most. Yet somehow, season 3 is on track to surpass that level of carnage easily, according to Alonso.

Alonso mentioned how he'd spoken to the show's makeup artist, and she'd given him an idea of how much fake blood was used during shooting, as well as how much they've already ordered for the new season. "I don't think they used over a gallon of blood in Season 2, believe it or not," he said to Collider, which might sound unexpected given the aforementioned head explosions. "Season 3, we're already at three and a half gallons of blood. So that should give you a little indication of where it's going." So not only will season 3 be far more visceral and gory than the previous 2, but The Boys can now proudly make the scientifically provable claim that it will, in fact, be 3 times as bloody. That probably also goes for the Billy Butcher kind of bloody, as well as the "heads and limbs flying off into the sunset" kind.

It's kind of funny how Alonso is the one to break this news, especially since his character tends to be one of the least extravagantly violent of the whole cast. That's not to say he shies away from killing, but Mother's Milk seems to be the more level-headed member of the titular superhero slayers, so that little disconnect is still amusing. In The Boys, he so far hasn't quite fallen to the depths of depravity that Karl Urban's Billy Butcher has in terms of reveling in the carnage. That isn't to say he won't, but at the moment, he seems positively mellow for a member of a team that blew up an invisible man from the inside out.

This is a series that rivals Mortal Kombat in its sheer amount of explicit violence, which probably explains why fellow star Jack Quaid (Hughie) wants to see a video game based on The Boys one day. At the very least, a video game setting would relieve some of the strain put on the (probably very messy) makeup department. But as for the show itself goes, it seems that things will only get more bleak and messy from here on out.

It was clear from the beginning that The Boys was never going to be a happy show. So at this point, the only question is just how far will its heroes fall before they can no longer be truly considered heroes? That's unknown, but at least their fall will be cushioned by gallons of blood.

The Boys seasons 1 and 2 are now available on Amazon Prime Video.
