A new photo was released today for the upcoming third season of Amazon Prime's dark superhero show The Boys and it features one of the new characters who will be joining the show. Blue Hawk is Vought International's newest hero who will be making his debut in the upcoming season and the character isn't even from the graphic novel, which will make fans who are familiar with the source material stand on their toes.
The Boys is a very popular live-action television series that offers social commentary on contemporary society and parodies superhero comic book characters. The main seven original characters of The Boys were clear comedic spins on the seven members of DC Comics' Justice League team. The show isn't afraid to pull punches and people often die in quick, brutal, or even unexpected ways. If superheroes were to exist today, the show argues that they wouldn't be as clear-cut as they are in the comics or movies and many viewers agree with this point of view, which makes The Boys compelling because it holds a mirror up to modern society.
Since The Boys' dark theme and violence are meant to reflect society, the creators wanted to keep the immersion going with a Youtube news channel that breaks the fourth wall. The series is called Seven on 7 with Cameron Coleman, which Vought International Youtube channel. Vought International is the fictional company from the actual show that is responsible for the creation and PR of superheroes. It's on this channel where the new character Blue Hawk, who will be played by Nick Wechsler, was revealed.
Blue Hawk is described as "patriotic" in the fictional news episode. Considering the theme of the show, the term patriotic may be exaggerated in a humorous or ironic way. For those who have seen The Suicide Squad and remember John Cena's Peacemaker, then they should know what to expect from Blue Hawk. It it possible that like Peacemaker, Blue Hawk is a character who uses "freedom, safety for all, and peace" to justify the murderous psychopathic crimes they commit.
Keeping The Boys dark and gritty is how it managed to do very well with ratings and retaining viewers. Many people believed at one point that superhero projects needed to be lighthearted in order to be seen, but that has been proven wrong. The Boys and other projects such as Deadpool or even Invincible have all proven that violence in a superhero story can still bring in viewers.
It's unclear how much of an effect Blue Hawk will have on the story of The Boys season 3 since he's not from the comics. With that being said, fans should keep an open mind and have reasonable expectations for the duration of this character's time on the show. He may be introduced just to be killed off in the same scene, or he may have a smaller role this season only to be a big aspect of the story in the next season.
