The Batman spinoff series The Penguin is officially in production, so HBO Max released an official teaser to give fans their first official glimpse at Colin Farrell's return as the DC Comics villain.

The Batman concluded with John Turturro's Carmine Falcone shot and killed by Paul Dano's Riddler, leaving a void to be filled in Gotham City's criminal underworld. The Penguin spinoff series continues The Batman story by following Farrell's Oswald Cobblepot as he seizes the opportunity to rise to power.

With production on The Penguin series underway, HBO Max released an official teaser trailer that includes footage from the show. The teaser opens with Farrell's Penguin contemplating what kind of life he wants and how guys like him must take whatever they decide belongs to them. The teaser also includes footage of Michael Kelly's character, whom Penguin seemingly calls Falcone's right-hand man. What follows are scenes of conflict between Penguin and the various characters seeking power positions made available by Falcone's death.

Perhaps the most notable character in the teaser aside from the Penguin is Cristin Milioti's Sofia Falcone, daughter of the late Carmine Falcone. Although she doesn't have any dialogue in the teaser, Sofia and Penguin are seen sharing drinks and seemingly toasting, suggesting an alliance between the two. Of course, this potential alliance may be uneasy at best. The teaser concludes with Penguin shooting an unseen individual and laughing at his work, with a voiceover proclaiming himself as the the "new Kingpin of Gotham."

The preview offers a lot of footage from the Penguin series for a behind-the-scenes teaser. Of course, The Penguin will tie into The Batman 2, so executive producer Matt Reeves will likely keep as many details as possible close to the chest. Still, fans can tell Penguin is a serious threat to those around him, made evident by his willingness to get involved in gunfights and confront his enemies directly.

Multiple The Batman spinoffs were reportedly being developed by Reeves. However, The Penguin series is the only one to get off the ground to date. So, fans are likely excited to see Reeves' DC crime saga continue, especially now that they know Robert Pattinson's Batman will be independent of James Gunn's separate DC Universe.

The Penguin will premiere on Max in 2024.
