Matt Reeves clarifies what fans can expect with The Batman sequel by expressing his interest in the character and stories, reflected in how he describes his approach to The Batman Part 2. Based on what Reeves says, the tone likely won't shift too far from what has already been established, as the ongoing story will still revolve around Batman and Bruce Wayne.Amid the sequel and Batman spinoff projects in development, it would be easy to lose sight of what worked in The Batman, especially within the machine that is Warner Bros. Luckily, Reeves still holds to his vision for Batman and echoes previous sentiments that describe his passion for the character and approach to the sequel. Thankfully, the director’s character-driven approach to Batman will likely remain the same and be taken even further, testing the character in new and creative means.RELATED: Mike Flanagan Clears Up Rumors About His Supposed DC PitchOn the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Reeves stated, “Whatever that story’s going to be, it’s going to be to take these characters and put them in some kind of emotional jeopardy. There’s a deep-dive that already happened at the beginning, and now I’m going to have to deep-dive again.” Reeves has the luxury of The Batman existing outside the main canon as an Elseworlds story, which allows the director to have more creative freedom than he would otherwise have if his Batman is just one piece of the larger DC canon. As a result, the franchise can stay director-driven, which may dive deeper into even more psychologically complex themes and systemic issues of crime.

Producer Dylan Clark told Christopher Nolan they wanted The Batman to surpass The Dark Knight. While that is up to debate among fans, which is a testament to how fantastic The Batman is, Reeves and Robert Pattinson are off to a great start. Certainly, Reeves will not play it safe with the sequel. Similar to Nolan's The Dark Knight, this will be the time for Reeves and Pattinson to put all their cards on the table and pull from even deeper places to deliver what is hopefully the best Batman movie.

While Nolan's Batman films play with genre and arguably focus more on the villains rather than the hero, Reeves has described his Batman movies as a character-driven “crime saga” that keeps the focus on Bruce Wayne. Even though there are similarities, such as the grounded nature of each director’s approach to Batman, there is enough to separate them so that The Batman Part 2 can be a unique experience. For fans who want to delve deeper into the mind of the director, The Batman screenplay is now available online to read for free, which will hopefully tide them over until The Penguin show releases.

The Batman Part 2 is scheduled to be released on October 3, 2025.
