The Batman 2 was believed to be canceled due to a rumor circulating the internet, but the claim appears to be unfounded, according to DCU boss James Gunn.

After the massive success of The Batman in 2022, Warner Bros. didn’t take long to announce that Reeves and Robert Pattinson would team up again to take the franchise forward. However, in recent weeks, there have been rumors and theories on social media that The Batman 2 might be canceled because of Gunn and Peter Safran's plan to revamp the DC Universe. However, Gunn seems to have shut down The Batman 2 rumors by giving a firm response to the burning question.

DCU head James Gunn has offered a promising update about a future DC project that might become one of the first titles in the Elseworlds branding.

On his official Threads account, the Guardians of the Galaxy director responded to a fan’s query about the upcoming project and noted that The Batman 2 is still happening. One user asked, “Hey James, some people are spreading the conspiracy theory that you canceled The Batman II, but I have to ask, is it true?" Gunn replied, "No," with an eye-rolling emoji. The recently announced DCU chief hasn’t been holding back in clearing the rumors about the DC projects and keeps providing short but promising updates on the future of titles and characters. The filmmaker didn’t give other details about The Batman 2, which may confirm that Reeves is still trying to figure out the story.

Some actors who will reprise their roles in the sequel have already confirmed that they haven’t seen The Batman 2 script yet. In an interview given to Entertainment Tonight, Academy Award nominee Jeffrey Wright noted that media outlets might know more about what’s happening behind the scenes than he does. Wright said, “You've seen as much of a script as I have at this point. I don't want to jump ahead. I just want to go forward with it." Even though fans are getting a bit impatient to know about The Batman 2, it doesn’t come as a shock that Reeves is taking his time to stitch a storyline that might change the landscape of DC movies. The Batman 2 might be the only confirmed title in DC's Elseworlds branding. Gunn has already said the label won’t start until 2025, meaning Joker 2 is not a part of the Elseworlds branding.

Since Gunn and Safran took charge of DC studios, they've focused on keeping what works. Reeves' The Batman 2 movie is part of that successful lineup, even though it won't be part of the DCU. The Batman was a box office hit and scored rave reviews from viewers. This proves Batman remains a thriving and timeless comic book adaptation, whether it's presented through video games or films. Every filmmaker has chosen to tell the caped crusader's story in their unique style, and fans always argue about which director perfectly captured all the essence of the iconic comic book character. Reeves did an excellent job narrating a neo-noir story with elements of action. Fans loved the first movie and want to see more of that world. It will be exciting to see what kind of storyline Reeves will follow and if he’ll show a more mature version of Pattinson's Batman this time.
