Although this year’s E3 felt a little odd with Sony and a few other publishers skipping the show, there were still plenty of exciting games on display. Some offered behind closed doors live demos, others actually let attendees go hands-on, and a few only had short prepared videos available.

So without taking the latter category into account, Game ZXC has selected its choices for the Best Games of E3 2019. Keep in mind personal preference plays a part in this selection and some things we saw are not currently available online.

10 Marvel’s Avengers

Marvel’s Avengers did what most popular games at E3 do: it used a behind closed doors gameplay presentation to clear up a lot of the confusion around the game. With almost a year to go until the game releases, there is still plenty more for Crystal Dynamics to reveal (and polish) but our early look at the game left us with the impression that this could be something special for Marvel fans. Not as expansive as Marvel’s Spider-Man, but thoughtful enough to do Earth’s Mightiest Heroes justice.

9 The Outer Worlds

Obsidian Entertainment’s live gameplay demo of The Outer Worlds put a lot of emphasis on the RPG systems of the game. For all intents and purposes, Obsidian is making a more space-focused version of Fallout, complete with companions, skill trees, dialogue checks, and tons of stats. If Fallout 76 left you wanting, The Outer Worlds is swooping in to fill that RPG void.

8 Cyberpunk 2077

In a similar vein, Cyberpunk 2077’s E3 2019 presentation put the spotlight on the game’s many RPG options. From character customization to dialogue trees, Cyberpunk 2077 is still very much in the spirit of CD Projekt Red’s past games. Yes, the game still looks gorgeous and there were no load screens. But what impressed us the most is how CDPR wants players to have total freedom when it comes to approaching this world, as evidenced by the demo going through sections of the game twice (once stealth and once on offense). And the game even supports a full non-lethal playthrough.

7 Dying Light 2

Choice was a big theme among some of our favorite E3 2019 games, like Dying Light 2. In our demo, developer Techland wanted to highlight how the player’s decisions as Aiden Caldwell will determine the world that they inhabit. Certain areas of the map will be completely locked off if players make one choice, while another player’s map might look totally different. And when it is all said and done, Techland expects players will only have seen about 50% of the game.

6 Final Fantasy 7 Remake

Square Enix has deftly combined updated visuals and a revamped combat system into a package that should satisfy most Final Fantasy 7 fans. The remake is brimming with nostalgia but still feels fresh and new in almost every facet. Put simply, this first taste of Final Fantasy 7 Remake proved that the game will be worth the wait, even if that includes several episodic releases.

5 Doom Eternal

If you loved the 2016 Doom reboot then you will feel right at home in Doom Eternal. It’s faster, more brutal, and its soundtrack is just as bass pounding as ever. New traversal options give the Doomslayer more options when it comes to zooming around the arenas, but the goal is still the same: reduce every demon to a heap of blood and guts. Doom Eternal doesn’t have time for franchise fatigue; there are more demons to kill.

4 LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga

Easily the biggest surprise of the show, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga takes a new engine and delivers a game that feels like a Star Wars game that just happens to use LEGO as its principal aesthetic. A new camera, improved combat, and open world areas help make this game feel like a complete overhaul of the LEGO game.

3 The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening

The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening is a remake built with care and detail. The visual style is the obvious selling point, but there is so much about the way Link’s Awakening plays, looks, and sounds that makes it extremely charming. If you’ve never played the original game or it’s your favorite Legend of Zelda, Link’s Awakening is going to be another retro-style hit for Nintendo.

2 Watch Dogs Legion

Playing as any character is the main selling point of Watch Dogs Legion, but that will only get the game so far. It’s the introduction of new classes, a perk system that makes each character unique, and a ton of new gadgets/hacking options that help bring Watch Dogs’ brand of technological mayhem into the near future. In some ways, it may seem like more Watch Dogs, but Legion left an impression with the promise of an experience that will feel uniquely your own.

1 Luigi’s Mansion 3

Luigi doesn’t get enough love within the Nintendo hierarchy, but he finally gets his much-requested sequel with Luigi’s Mansion 3. Going hands-on with the game brought back memories of the Gamecube-era experience, from flashing ghosts to inhaling them with your Poltergust 3000. The Luigi’s Mansion formula doesn’t feel sufficiently mined yet, and so this third entry will try to combine a modern platform with new puzzles, clever design, and a charming main character.

Some of these games may not end up delivering when they finally release but for an initial first showing or a chance to finally go hands-on, they left a strong impression. And the good news is all of them should be out before E3 next year.

Note: there were a few games we did not see at E3 2019 including Gears 5, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, and Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2, among others.
