The upcoming Texas Chain Saw Massacre from developer Gun Interactive is set to feature a major departure from many modern games, shedding the standard battle pass system. Horror games have seen a major transition in recent years with many diving into the asymmetrical multiplayer genre to capture the horror of battling a seemingly insurmountable enemy. Games like Dead by Daylight and Evil Dead have helped to popularize the genre within the multiplayer space. Now, the upcoming Texas Chain Saw Massacre adaptation is looking to make a significant shift from its modern contemporaries.

Since the adaptation of the beloved Texas Chain Saw Massacre horror films was first announced, the game has given fans of the films plenty of reasons to be excited. The developer of the multiplayer Friday the 13th has revealed several details about the game, showing off how players can work as a team to escape from the menacing Leatherface. Gun Interactive would also confirm the game to be more heavily inspired by the original film, rather than its multitude of sequels. Now, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is apparently cutting away one particularly prevalent modern staple, the battle pass.

During a recent interview with gaming outlet MP1st, Gun Interactive would reveal it is currently not intending to include a battle pass with Texas Chain Saw Massacre. While the studio revealed its employees have "internally discussed" the idea, the developer would confirm the game plans to feature more traditional DLC. The change comes as a stark departure from other horror games like the previously mentioned Dead by Daylight, which heavily monetize around battle passes.

The exclusion of a battle pass within Texas Chain Saw Massacre bucks a longstanding trend that has accompanied several online games. Many popular online games have used battle passes as a way to provide content to players as a reward for playing the game more. The monetization method is especially popular with free-to-play games like Fortnite and Fall Guys, with players incentivized to buy Battle Passes for exclusive cosmetics. Several games have even mixed battle passes with more traditional DLC packages.

While the upcoming Texas Chain Saw Massacre is only the second video game to adapt the popular franchise, Leatherface has made appearances in multiple other horror games. The iconic killer found his way into Dead by Daylight as "The Cannibal" with Behaviour Interactive recently denying rumors he would be leaving the game. Leatherface would also transition into a fighting game as a DLC character in Capcom's Mortal Kombat X in 2016. The upcoming Texas Chain Saw Massacre looks to be a horror-filled multiplayer experience rivaling that of Gun Interactive's Friday the 13th.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre will release on August 18th for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
