There are a ton of hidden mini-events found throughout the strange and fascinating world of Terraria, and each gives a unique reward that players can use to enhance their adventures. The Torch God, the lord of all flaming lighting implements, does not actually make a physical appearance in the game, however, their deadly trial most certainly does.

If one manages to pass the trial of this inflamed deity, they will receive the Torch God's Favor, which, to put it simply, will allow all of the torches one places to match the biome that they are in. This will in turn increase one's Luck stat; a hidden value that influences chances of unique item drops, rare enemy spawns, and much more.

How To Begin The Trial

To start the trial of the Torch God, players will need to place 100 torches in a close grouping below the Surface layer of the world. This can be done in any biome and during any time of day or night, therefore setting things up should be fairly easy if one has the resources to craft all of the required torches.

Furthermore, any kind of torch counts towards the total needed to begin the trial. Keep in mind that players who have already completed the trial of the Torch God cannot perform it again by normal means, even if they no longer possess the Torch God's Favor.

What Happens During The Trial

When all required torches are placed, the trial will immediately begin, so be prepared for a sudden start! All torches will shoot at the player in linear attack patterns, which are not too tricky to predict or dodge individually, though, the sheer number of attacks being launched can get overwhelming, so be sure to give oneself lots of room to maneuver.

The fireballs that are sent at the player will do 40 damage each on normal difficulty, 80 damage on expert difficulty, and 120 damage on master difficulty. They can also pass through blocks, so hiding in an underground bunker will not help during this trial. While this is happening, the player will also be afflicted by the Blackout debuff, which will make the screen a fair bit darker and obscure one's vision, further increasing the challenge of the Torch God's Trial.

How To Complete The Trial

The Torch God's trial is a survival test that will end after the player has proven their worth. A maximum of 200 attacks will be fired off by the torches in one's constructed subterranean arena. When the assault ends, the player will complete the trial automatically and acquire the Torch God's Favor. Following this success, all torches will reignite harmlessly and the player is free to leave. However, if one dies or exits their trial arena, this mini-event will end and nothing will be rewarded.

List Of Important Factors

While this is not the most complex of mini-events, it can be a bit tedious to keep track of everything. Therefore, here's a streamlined checklist to make sure that nothing is forgotten.

Torch God Trial Checklist

  • There are no enemies or hostile beings that spawn during the trial
  • The trial can be done in multiplayer, though the Torch God's Favor cannot be shared between players
  • Fireballs match the color of the torch that they are launched from, which can be used to keep track of which ones have attacked
  • If the player leaves the world in the middle of the trial, exhausted torches will not reignite and need to be replaced to attempt the trial again
  • Any type of torch can contribute to the trial's starting requirements
  • Torches placed during the trial can also launch fireball attacks at the player
  • The attacks of torches cannot hurt enemies, animals, NPCs, or other players who have already completed the trial
  • If torches are tampered with via wiring or explosives, the trial will prematurely end

Tips & Tricks For An Easier Trial

For those having trouble completing this burning trial, there are quite a few ways to set things up for an advantage. Using some counter-tactics is highly advised, especially if one is playing on expert or master difficulty. Here are some ways to make the trial of the Torch God easier.

Hot Tips

  • While the torches need to be somewhat bunched together, it is recommended to set up an arena in an area with lots of open space for easier evasion
  • Sources of light that are not torches, such as lanterns, can be used to illuminate the area to counter the Blackout effect and will not launch fireballs at the player
  • It is recommended to avoid using Crimson Torches for this trial, as their black-colored fireballs are very hard to see while the Blackout effect is active
  • Platforms, ropes, and Minecart Tracks can be set up around the cluster of torches for easy ways to avoid the fireballs
  • Grappling Hooks of all kinds can also be very helpful in dodging the fireballs
  • Potions can be used to increase visibility (Night Owl Potion), reduce damage (Ironskin Potion), and increase speed (Swiftness Potions)
  • The game's Autopause feature can be used to cheese this trial by opening one's menu frequently to better keep track of all the incoming fireballs and prepare for them
