Terraria has a large selection of armor and weapons that players can use in the game. Between all the cosmetic Terraria armor options, players can completely customize how their character will look. They can even use dyes to change colors of armor and even add animations to them.
Dyes
In Terraria, dyes function a lot like equipment. They are equipped to armor and vanity items in their third item slot. This means the dyes are not usable items, and can be easily switched out or removed at a whim. Players who like to alter the color of their armor and outfits can just keep several dyes at the ready, changing the colors whenever they wish. Many of even the rarest Terraria items have a dye slot available.
Making or Buying Dye
Players can purchase dyes as well as make them from raw materials. Dyes can be purchased for 5 gold from the Dye Trader, who was one of the many NPCs added during Terraria's update 1.2. The Dye Trader will spawn at a player's home only when the player has a Strange Plant in their inventory.
Making dye requires a Dye Vat crafting station. Players can purchase the Dye Vat from the Dye Trader for 5 gold. The Dye Vat can be used to make dye from raw materials or it can combine dyes together to make new ones. Either way, players will need to summon a Dye Trader to get some colorful changes to their outfits.
Creating Dyes
There are a large number of dyes that players can make in Terraria. While there are a grand total of 65 different colors and combined colors of dyes, here is a list of the basic dyes that players can create from found materials.
- Red - Red Husks
- Orange - Orange Bloodroot
- Yellow - Yellow Marigold
- Lime - Lime Kelp
- Green - Green Mushroom
- Teal - Teal Mushroom
- Cyan - Cyan Husk
- Sky Blue - Sky Blue Flower
- Blue - Blue Berries
- Purple - Purple Mucos
- Violet - Violet Husk
- Pink - Pink Prickly Pear
- Black - Black Ink
Most other dyes are made by mixing dyes together in the Vat or by trading a Strange Plant with the Dye Trader for a random Dye. Players can also create other colors by mixing these basic colors together. For example, mixing Yellow, Lime, and Orange Dyes together will make a Yellow Gradient Dye, or mixing any color of dye with silver dye (which can only be purchased) will make a Bright version of that color. While dyeing armor to a new color won't make a player's Terraria builds any better, it will make them look cooler, which is a worthy cause in itself.
