In the nine years it’s been available, Terraria has grown from a 2D Minecraft clone into a solid sandbox game in its own right, offering players an increasingly varied amount of unique things to discover and do stuff with. And with the release of its final major update, update 1.4, also known as Journey’s End, the game has become a whole lot bigger. In fact, with everything players can now do, it can be hard to experience it all in a timely fashion.

Enter the Pylons that were added to Terraria with the 1.4 update. These new items function as teleporters that let them quickly travel across their procedurally-generated worlds. Once they know how to get them, that is.

How To Get Pylons

Pylons come in multiple variations, with each one corresponding to one of Terraria’s many biomes. Getting them is actually fairly straightforward, as each biome’s Pylon can be purchased by any of the vendor NPCs living in said biome. However, there is one wrinkle that players are going to have to take into account first: Terraria’s new Happiness system.

As of 1.4, NPCs now have a Happiness stat that will go up or down depending on factors like which biome players house them in and which NPCs are housed near them. Each NPC has their own unique preferences for players to balance out, but the general rule of thumb is that as long as vendors are housed in their preferred biome near an NPC they love, their Happiness will be high enough for them to sell players Pylons.

How To Use Pylons

Players can place a Pylon anywhere within its respective biome, so long as that biome has two resident NPCs housed nearby. The exception to this is the Universal Pylon that players can unlock by completing the Bestiary for the Zoologist, as that can be used in any biome at any distance from NPCs. Anyway, once they’ve placed two or more, they will be able to teleport between them either by interacting with a Pylon directly or by selecting one on the fullscreen map when standing near a Pylon.

As simple as that is, though, there are a few other restrictions for players to keep in mind. First off, players can only place one of each Pylon in a world, meaning they are going to have to rely on other methods for quickly traveling within a biome. Also worth noting is that a Pylon network can’t be used during boss battles or mob invasions, in case players were thinking they could use them to retreat in an emergency.

Terraria is available for 3DS, iOS, PC, PS3, PS4, PS Vita, Switch, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
