After the release of a major remake, the Final Fantasy series is enjoying a resurgence in popularity. While fans remain excited for both the upcoming Final Fantasy 16 and other spinoff games, this excitement seems to have its limits. Recently, Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of Final Fantasy, announced that he and developer Mistwalker would be ending support for their mobile RPG, Terra Battle.Â
Released in 2014, Terra Battle gained recognition for its "Download Starter" program, which allowed its fanbase to unlock perks as more people started playing. As more players downloaded the mobile app, other Final Fantasy alumni like series composer Nobuo Uematsu added to the game.
In a statement released on the Terra Battle website, Mistwalker's team announced that it was ending support for the mobile game on June 30, 2020. The team said that it chose to shut down the game because it would no longer be able to provide the same level of quality for future content and service. The post then outlined the "sunset schedule" of the app. As of this announcement, fans will no longer be able to purchase in-game currency. However, players will be able to spend the currency until Mistwalker terminates service. The penultimate milestone is June 15, when users will no longer be able to transfer or recover save data.
Sakaguchi also personally addressed the fanbase. His message reminisced about Terra Battle's early days and thanked players for keeping the game alive for six years. Sakaguchi teased his next project with Mistwalker, an Apple Arcade title called Fantasian. According to the message, nostalgic fans who loved Sakaguchi's NES games should look forward to this game.
