About three months ago, cancer-stricken Borderlands 3 fan Trevor Eastman was able to play the looter-shooter threequel early, as his prognosis wasn't good. He had been diagnosed with stage 4 esophageal, stomach, and liver cancer, and wasn't likely going to live long enough to see the official launch of BL3. Now, Eastman has shared an update on his condition, just days afterward.

It seems he was given a digital copy of Borderlands 3 by Gearbox at launch, allowing him to enjoy the game at no cost. However, he also revealed that his condition has deteriorated to the point that he has been taken off chemo and immunotherapy. This comes after spending a couple of weeks in the hospital, which resulted in Eastman being placed into hospice care for the remaining days of his life.

He made this announcement on the Borderlands 3 subreddit, as he continued, in order to thank everyone who made his experience with BL3 possible — the community and Gearbox. The feedback he received was incredibly heartwarming, with many also wondering what character he would be playing, to which he responded: "FL4K." He also took a moment to show off the gun that he named a few months ago, as well as the exclusive legendary launch weapon skin for it that Gearbox had designed.

The gun is called the Compressing Trevonator and is a Maliwan shotgun, with Eastman also adding the following flavor text: "Trev is gunna get you!" The Abundant Dangerous Trevonator also seems to be a skin that Gearbox added at launch, likely in celebration of Eastman, to the gun he designed. It is complete with a full-color scheme overhaul and comes with the text "Trevonator" on the side.

While this is a heartbreaking story in many ways, it's also a heartwarming one. It speaks to the true testament of any gaming community and what can be accomplished together. Our thoughts are with you, Trevor. Enjoy Borderlands 3.

Borderlands 3 is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with a Stadia version also in development.
