It’s no longer a question of whether or not Tenetmight be delayed again, because Warner Bros. has announced that Christopher Nolan’s mysterious time-bending thriller is no longer coming out on July 31.

Originally slated to come out on July 17 before being pushed back two weeks, it’s been confirmed that the movie’s premiere has been delayed another two weeks to August 12. This news comes as a recent surge in COVID-19 cases across the U.S. has been casting growing doubt on the likelihood and practicality of theaters being able to fully reopen by next month.

In an official statement, a Warner Bros spokesperson reaffirmed the company’s commitment to bringing Tenet to the big screen as soon as it’s safe to do so. “In this moment what we need to be is flexible, and we are not treating this as a traditional movie release,” they said while pointing out how the movie is set to premiere on a Wednesday instead of the more common Thursday or Friday.

This, they said, is to “allow audiences to discover the film in their own time.” Moreover, the spokesperson said that the plan is to screen Tenet for much longer than normal, a move likely due to the shortage of movies coming to theaters in 2020. The hope is that this will result in a “very different yet successful release strategy,” but that will ultimately depend on whether or not movie-goers will be comfortable enough to flock back to theaters once they reopen.

Tenet is set to premiere in theaters on August 12, pending any further delays.
