The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom producer Eiji Aonuma states that he'd be interested in an adaptation of the series onto the big screen. Nintendo's had an impressive 2023 so far with two of its most recognizable IPs. There was the box office-breaking success of the Super Mario Bros. Movie along with fans finally seeing the highly anticipated release of Tears of the Kingdom after years of delays and teasing. Tears of the Kingdom is already a critical darling, seeing the same positive reception that Breath of the Wild laid the groundwork for half a decade earlier. With both seeing massive success within roughly the same timeframe, there might be some that are craving to see the iconic franchise take to the big screen.

The Legend of Zelda having its own theatrical film has been a dream many fans have wanted for years, roughly around the same amount of time that Mario fans have been waiting for a movie. Years of the infamous "video game movie curse" have clipped its chances for quite a while, and it wasn't until recently that video game movies have broken away from that perception with films like Detective Pikachu and Sonic the Hedgehog (2020). With Nintendo's box office blockbuster with the Mario movie, Aonuma was asked if he'd be interested in a film based on Zelda, to which he stated it needed to be under the right circumstances.

In an interview between the Tears of the Kingdom producer and Polygon, Aonuma was asked if the recent success of the Mario movie had gotten him excited to do a Zelda-focused adaptation. While he states he is interested in the prospect, his interest isn't the only factor in making it happen, which he adds is rather unfortunate.

Tears of the Kingdom director, Hidemaro Fujibayashi, chimes in with that the voice of fans can help in the prospect, where if they voice their desire for one, it might happen. However, as it currently stands, a film adaptation of the Zelda series isn't currently in the works.

This interview also revealed a number of other details about the development of the game. This includes things such as the origins of Link's new Ascend ability, which came about as a debug feature to escape caves, to revisiting the Zonai tribe after Breath of the Wild had left them as an enigma. Aonuma even stated that the new Ascend ability was his favorite among the abilities introduced in Tears of the Kingdom.
