Tales from the Borderlands was an unfortunate victim of developer Telltale’s shutdown, with the game being delisted following the studio’s temporary closure. Fortunately, Tales from the Borderlands has made a return, with the choice-based adventure game now available in digital storefronts.
Taken down back in 2019, Tales from the Borderlands has been absent from online shops for over a year, with fans of the episodic game wondering when, and if, it would return. Last week saw confirmation that it would be making a comeback, though, with Gearbox making an official post announcing its re-launch last week. Since then, an official trailer has been unveiled, with the game officially available to download right now.
The trailer reveals little about the game’s story, keeping much of the main narrative beats hidden behind explosions, catchy music, and shots of the Tales from the Borderlands cast. Not only does the spinoff feature cameos from fan favorite characters like Zer0, Brick, Mordecai, and Athena, but it has a noticeable impact on the franchise’s story as a whole. Giving a proper sendoff to Handsome Jack while explaining the mechanic Scooter’s absence from the third game, plenty goes on during the series' five episodes, and player choice can lead to several different funny and intense scenarios.
During its ten hour runtime, Tales from the Borderlands also introduces several original, likable characters, with Gortys and Loaderbot being some of the standouts. In the game, players control Fiona and Rhys, with the former being a con artist and the latter being a Hyperion employee. While Fiona is not seen in Borderlands 3, Rhys has a major role in the main story, making Tales from the Borderlands worthy of a play for any new players interested in learning about the Atlas CEO’s origins. With Rhys' pal Vaughn also having a role in the third game, Tales from the Borderlands is worth playing for new players and longtime fans alike.
While last week’s announcement did not confirm which digital storefronts the game would be launching on, the launch trailer did. PC fans can find the game on Steam and the Epic Games Store, while PlayStation and Xbox fans can find it in their respective stores. Though no PS5 and Xbox Series X enhancements have been provided for the game, it is playable on the next gen consoles via backwards compatibility.
It remains to be seen if this Tales from the Borderlands re-release leads to a second season or is simply a move to give the original season a second chance at life. Regardless, fans of Tales from the Borderlands can finally download the game once again, bringing the long wait for a re-release to a welcome end.
