Streaming giant Netflix has released the first full trailer for their upcoming post-apocalyptic fantasy series Sweet Tooth. The three-minute trailer gives fans insight into the life of a hybrid child named Gus, who is half-human and half-deer, and the journey he embarks on to find others like himself while escaping a group of people hunting his kind.

The eight-episode Netflix series is an adaptation of Jeff Lemire’s comic book series of the same name, published by DC’s Vertigo imprint, and arrives on the streaming platform in early June. In the comics, the story takes place in a mostly rural post-apocalyptic setting, something the show will be keeping intact, with the trailer focusing on survival as the main theme.

The Sweet Tooth trailer begins with an emphasis on how politics ruined the state of the world, which was followed by a mysterious disease that wreaked havoc. As the world crumbles, a few hospital staff, including a doctor, come across a room full of hybrid babies. Their birth is shrouded in mystery, with no clear evidence of whether the plague could have caused the deformities. One of the babies is the lead character Gus, played by Christian Convery.

The Sweet Tooth trailer then goes on to show Gus being chased by a group of “bad people.” This is when he meets Tommy Jepperd, played by Nonso Anozie, who agrees to help him travel across America, or what’s left of it, to find a safe haven for hybrid children. This plot is similar to that of the comics published by DC, wherein the storyline begins with Gus living a sheltered life, away from a declining society, along with his father. After his father’s death, a group of men tries to capture Gus, but Jeppard comes to his rescue.

The Sweet Tooth trailer offers a look at some of the great cinematography the show has to offer as Gus and Jepperd traverse through the lands and some lush green forests, which will remind viewers of the first game in The Last of Us series, where a smuggler named Joel escorts a teenager girl Ellie across the post-apocalyptic USA. Apart from that, there is a lot of focus on some of Sweet Tooth's key relationships and a lot of emotions as Gus comes face-to-face with the complex world outside his home. The show is executive produced by Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey.

While the show is an adaptation, it isn’t quite similar to the comic series from DC. The comics are known for their dark undertones, with horror being an important theme. However, Downey Jr. has already noted the differences between the series and the source material, and after watching the trailer, it seems like it will be taking a more family-friendly approach.

Sweet Tooth premieres on Netflix on June 4, 2021.
