From gamers finally receiving Starfield gameplay to some new looks at other big titles like Redfall and Hollow Knight: Silksong, there were plenty of new reveals and exciting things to be seen at this year's Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase. Alongside the more well-known titles were some unique and intriguing upcoming indie games that fans may have missed out on during the extensive presentation. The Last Case of Benedict Fox, a new supernatural horror title, for example, is certainly a game to watch out for if a gamer is a fan of Lovecraft or metroidvania-style gameplay.

Polish developer Plot Twist showcased their latest title at the recent Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase, and right from the beginning it is clear to see the Lovecraftian influence in The Last Case of Benedict Fox. As the reveal trailer opens with the titular Benedict Fox arriving at his family home on a stormy evening, a tentacled monster latches itself onto him. At first, it appears that the monster will be the first of many locked inside the house, however, it seems further on in the trailer that the Lovecraftian-inspired creature is more of an ally than a foe.

This is confirmed later in the trailerfor The Last Case of Benedict Fox and in the description for the game that tells viewers that the monster at Fox's back is actually his "demon companion," which can help him see into the memories of his family. This appears to be the gameplay hook of The Last Case of Benedict Fox, as he uncovers the dark intrigue behind his family history. In terms of gameplay, this translates to a metroidvania style of play that sees Benedict having to fight monsters and solve puzzles in order to figure out the truth of his heritage.

While a lot of Lovecraftian horror is associated with cosmic horror and giant tentacle monsters beyond human comprehension, there are also plenty of stories by the 20th century author that focus on more intimate horror, especially concerning family history and detectives stumbling into the wrong place at the wrong time. It seems that by combining the typical Lovecraftian monsters with some of the more nuanced elements of the author's storytelling, The Last Case of Benedict Fox shows an influence from all aspects of Lovecraftian horror.

However, The Last Case of Benedict Fox is more than just a tribute to Lovecraftian stories, and the game has plenty more for fans to dig into. As the game's setting is torn between limbo and the mansion, there will be a multitude of enemies to flee from and face in combat. Moreover, many excited fans have highlighted the art style as a reason to keep an eye out for The Last Case of Benedict Fox.

The Last Case of Benedict Fox is set to release in spring 2023 for PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
