Highlights

  • David Corenswet is hitting the gym hard to prepare for his role as Superman in the upcoming film Superman: Legacy.
  • He faces the challenge of recreating Henry Cavill's muscular appearance as the iconic superhero.
  • The film is part of DC Studios' efforts to revive the struggling DC franchise and establish a connected narrative between its movies.

Superman: Legacy star David Corenswet is hitting the gym hard for his role as Clark Kent, as filming for the project is quickly approaching. Superman has rippled with muscle since his introduction in Action Comics, a characteristic that Corenswet needs to recreate.

Regarding physicality, a high bar was set by previous Superman actor Henry Cavill. Sporting massive biceps and a barrel-chested torso, Corenswet has his work cut out for him if he wishes to recreate Cavill's appearance. Superman: Legacy releases in July of 2025, with plans to begin filming in March 2024. With that timeframe quickly approaching, Corenswet's preparation for the role seems to be in full swing.

In an image posted to Paolo Mascitti's Instagram, Corenswet looks quite buff sitting on a chair. Mascitti is Corenswet's personal trainer, tasked with getting the 30-year-old actor into fighting shape for the biggest role of his career so far. While Corenswet was already fit and toned in previous productions, he's looking to put on some bulk for his big break as the Kryptonian Kal-El.

Superman: Legacy has a lot riding on it. The newly formed DC Studios looks to revive a DC franchise that has struggled lately on the big screen. Having been left in the dust by Marvel Studios, DC is looking to claw its way back into the limelight with renewed energy. Successful Hollywood leaders James Gunn and Peter Safran co-founded the new DC Studios, replacing the now-defunct DC Films. Gunn made it clear that he's determined to save DC movies. The two have already introduced a slate of promising projects.

Director James Gunn's Superman: Legacy is part of DC Studios' plans to mimic Marvel Studios' approach of having a connecting narrative between all of its movies. So, fans can expect Clark Kent, Bruce Wayne, and the Joker to have interweaving storylines.

Recently, news broke that María Gabriela de Faría was cast as The Engineer, one of Superman: Legacy's villains who will be squaring off with Corenswet's Clark Kent. However, Faría's role as The Engineer may be more complicated than previously thought, with both the actor and Gunn making interesting comments about about The Engineer's true place within the story. The Engineer is part of The Authority, a team of rogue superheroes who use controversial methods to accomplish their tasks. The Authority is getting their own movie within the DCU, so it seems likely that Faria's character will be more complicated than the typical supervillain, possibly switching sides between good and evil.

Superman: Legacy releases in theaters on July 11, 2025.
