Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow has tapped writer Ana Nogueira to pen the screenplay. The DCU movie is still in the early stages of its development with no director attached but is steadily moving ahead through pre-production.

This news comes as James Gunn and producer Peter Safran usher in a new era for films in the DC universe (DCU). Replacing DC Films, DC Studios aims to redefine the franchise's place in the cinematic world, hoping to recover from past missteps and recreate Marvel Studios' massive success. Gunn stated that this new series of DC projects will feature a streamlined narrative connected between different films and shows. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will be part of the first phase of the new DCU films.

The Hollywood Reporter detailed that Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will be written by Nogueira, who was initially hired in 2022 to write a Supergirl project as a spinoff to the DCEU's The Flash movie, in which Sasha Calle played Supergirl. However, Gunn and Safran liked Nogueira's script so much that they hired her to write another Supergirl movie for DC's new era. Gunn took to Instagram to confirm Nogueira was joining Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, giving fans a hint at what to expect from her screenplay.

The Supergirl character is distinct from her famous cousin Superman, differing in essential ways that will give a fresh approach to the Kryptonian family. Gunn's Supergirl movie will explore this by taking inspiration from a series of comic books by Tom King. These stories follow Supergirl, Krypto the superdog, and a young alien friend on a mission across the galaxy to get vengeance. The series, released throughout 2021 and 2022, was met with widespread acclaim and offers DC movie fans a hopeful vision of the future.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will join future films from DC Studios, such as Superman: Legacy. Gunn will direct the pivotal Superman: Legacy, scheduled to be released in July 2025. Thanks to DC's new approach, it's safe to assume that Supergirl will play a part in Superman: Legacy and potentially other forthcoming films.

Although DC fans still enjoyed some hits over the past decade, such as Joker and The Batman, the franchise was largely overshadowed by the record-breaking success of the MCU. Gotham and Metropolis fanatics should be excited over what the future holds. Gunn and Safran seem determined to reinvigorate the franchise and utilize its wealth of entertaining source material.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow does not yet have a release date.
