Supergirl actress Milly Alcock's casting as the DCU's Woman of Tomorrow was praised by fans. While the House of the Dragon star was assumed to star in the upcoming Superman: Legacy film, James Gunn may have halted the rumors.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow found its writer in Ana Nogueira in November 2023, with no director attached. Plot details remain largely unknown, but serving as a standalone film for Superman's cousin Kara Zor-El, the comics follow the Kryptonian when an alien girl named Ruthye seeks her out for a revenge mission against the guys who destroyed her world. For co-DC Chiefs Gunn and Peter Safran, the top contenders in screen tests for the role were reportedly Emilia Jones, Meg Donnelly, and Alcock, with the House of the Dragon star winning the role.

Superman: Legacy's Main Conflict Won't Be From A Villain

Superman: Legacy will see the Man of Steel once again try to save the world, but the main conflict will come from within.

On January 29th, Alcock was announced as Supergirl, which Gunn later confirmed on Instagram. The actress was praised for perfectly embodying Kara as envisioned by Nogueira, Tom King, and Bilquis Evely, the comic creators. Rumors of Supergirl making her initial appearance in Gunn and Safran's DCU Chapter One "Gods and Monsters" first film, Superman: Legacy, began before the casting was even announced, but Gunn shut it down on Threads on January 30. When a fan asked how much screen time Alcock would get in Superman: Legacy, Gunn responded, "I never even said she was in the movie."

Commenters and Reddit fans believe Gunn is playing coy by throwing fans off, considering the original question boils into spoiler territory. Since Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow —which Gunn suggested for a 2027 release — has yet to announce a director, people are asking why he'd cast this far in advance if he doesn't plan on utilizing the character in the new Superman entry. Others suggest Alcock may not be in the movie as either a main role or cameo but could appear in an end/post-credit scene that sets up what's to come in her solo film. Considering many other publications have reported Supergirl would appear in Superman: Legacy and as a key component, fans are skeptical of Gunn, also pointing out he never said she wasn't in the movie either.

When Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow was first announced at the DC Studios' Press Day a year ago on January 31, 2023, Gunn said fans would see an updated version of Supergirl. Reportedly, Alcock was the first person Gunn had in mind for Supergirl over a year ago, and he was impressed after watching her as young Rhaenyra Targaryen in House of the Dragon. If Supergirl does appear in Legacy as a secondary character alongside Superman himself, this would be the first time in live-action film history that the pair would be onscreen together in the same movie. That is if The Flash's CGI scene of the characters doesn't count.
