Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has thrived on the backs of its character inclusions. Fans have wanted Waluigi to join Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for years, and while he's not in that particular game, he's available to play in the fanmade Project M mod.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the fifth entry in the longrunning Super Smash Bros. franchise. Once originally just Nintendo mascots duking it out, the franchise over the years has grown to feature characters beyond Nintendo, with Ultimate including the likes of Joker from Persona 5, to most recently Kazuya from Tekken. Through two Fighters Passes, Nintendo has added many DLC fighters to Ultimate, but with one fighter left to reveal and Nintendo having no plans for a third Fighters Pass, the stakes are very high on this final character reveal. Waluigi is the final Super Mario character not to be playable in Ultimate, only appearing in the game as an Assist Trophy.

King Bob Gaming recently shared their impressive trailer of Waluigi's invitation Super Smash Bros., intercut with footage of the Waluigi Project M mod in action. Though there are mods that add Waluigi to Ultimate, currently he is unavailable in the game. The video plays on the ongoing tagline for the game, that "Everyone is here!" except for Waluigi. With characters like Daisy and all of the Koopalings getting representation in the game, it really makes one wonder why Waluigi has not been put into the game yet.

The trailer starts with Waluigi viewing a bilboard that states, "Everyone is here!" below the iconic mural image of the Smash roster used prominently throughout the game. Waluigi sullenly looks upon it, when he sees Toad checking his mail and getting his invitation to Smash. Things turn dark as Waluigi's frustration mounts, his expression growing darker and darker, and the images of the billboard and Toad cutting quickly in and out. Just as Sephiroth descended into Super Smash Bros. uninvited, Waluigi does the same, launching Toad with his tennis racket, and officially inviting himself.

For Waluigi to join Ultimate would be a really neat bow on the game, and potentially Smash in general. The problem remains with his presence in the game as an Assist Trophy—despite the game's theatrics and encouragement of chaos, Ultimate remains presentable and cohesive through its character direction and limitations. Having a playable Waluigi and an Assist Trophy Waluigi in the game at the same time would break the unified, immersive experience of the game. There are many other Assist Trophies that should be playable in Ultimate though—here's hoping the last DLC fighter is one of them.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available now on the Nintendo Switch.
