Super Smash Bros. Ultimate director Masahiro Sakurai confirmed the return of a story mode to the popular Nintendo fighting game on Thursday morning. Waiting until the very end of the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Nintendo Direct, Sakurai unveiled the World of Light Adventure Mode. Much about the World of Light remains mysterious, but Super Smash Bros. Ultimate players can expect a lengthy single-player experience to rival even Subspace Emissary.

In the World of Light Adventure Mode, a powerful and unknown enemy has attacked - and won. Dozens, if not hundreds, of video game characters from past Nintendo games have lost their bodies and have been transformed into spirits. The only character to have escaped the initial attack is Kirby, riding a star. Kirby alone will have to discover the nature of the World of Light, though it's unlikely he'll be alone for too long.

Based off of what was shown in the World of Light trailer shared at the end of today's Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Nintendo Direct, players will effectively be playing an RPG. The World of Light will initially be enshrouded in fog, but as players progress they'll fight unique custom encounters and overcome puzzle-based obstacles to unlock new areas. Colored "!" blocks and pipes from Super Mario World, treasure chests from The Legend of Zelda, Lapras water traversal from Pokemon, and so much more themed gameplay awaits in the World of Light.

World of Light looks like it will serve as a sort of introductory system to a ton of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's content. Playing through it will likely require players experiment with a lot of different fighters, as well as face off against perhaps the entire roster. World of Light looks like it will also be tied into the newly announced Spirits systems, where unlocked spirits can serve as permanent power-ups that can be leveled up individually and augmented with other spirits. The story of World of Light will hopefully stand on its own, too.

For players who don't want to focus on local and online multiplayer, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's World of Light looks like it'll provide a unique single-player experience uniquely compelling.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate releases December 7 exclusively on the Nintendo Switch.
