Fans would be hard-pressed to find a game in the Nintendo Switch's library with a cast as legendary as that of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. It celebrates many different corners of not only the company's history, but also gaming in general. The roster has some of the most iconic gaming characters in one place, with many recognizable faces and companies represented. After launch, a total of twelve DLC characters were added, with Sora from Kingdom Hearts rounding out the final batch of fighters.

Many fans know that during Sora's adventures, he has met characters from both Disney's many properties, as well as Square Enix's Final Fantasy series. This includes the two most iconic characters of Final Fantasy 7, Cloud and Sephiroth. These two characters are also a part of the roster of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, with Cloud being available in the base game and Sephiroth being added last year. All of these characters were created and designed by Square Enix's Tetsuya Nomura, who commented on these characters being included in the game and the reception that fans have had to the additions.

Nomura, alongside many other gaming industry figures, was interviewed by GameSpot about Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's final roster. When Cloud's eternal nemesis was revealed last year, he confirmed that he was watching the reaction videos across social media. "I think Sephiroth was pretty unexpected, so it was fun to see how surprised people were," Nomura explained. "Considering he was the second Final Fantasy VII character to be added to the game, I was somewhat unsure if it was okay for him to take up one of those precious slots in the roster. I was relieved to see that people responded positively to his announcement."

In regards to Nomura's comments about Sora, he noted that it was worth the trouble Square Enix went through in order to make it happen. This included the announcement that the Kingdom Hearts series would be coming to the Switch. He noted that he was happy and that the fan reaction exceeded his expectations, with the scene at the end showing Sora and Mario's handshake being a major highlight.

When Nomura was asked about how it felt to have these three legendary JRPG figures in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, he said "It's truly an honor that Cloud, Sephiroth, and now Sora--not just one or two of the characters I helped make, but three of them - have been invited into a world that features such an impressive group of characters." Nomura's final comment gave thanks to the fans being so supportive of the three, and hoped that the late Satoru Iwata was as happy as he was about their inclusion.
