A number of new Spirits will be added to Nintendo's popular Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the company has revealed. The Spirits are going to be based on characters from several third-party gaming franchises, and fans are already ecstatic over the new content.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate currently has more than 1,500 Spirits, which are power-ups and collectibles that provide buffs and allow players to use special skills during matches. Spirits come in the form of beloved game characters, and many actually originate from non-Nintendo properties. More Spirits like these are set to join Super Smash Bros. Ultimate very soon, according to Nintendo.

Super Smash Bros. 64 Mod Adds Cult Classic N64 Characters

The newest version of a fan-made mod for Super Smash Bros 64 adds a ton of new content, including iconic and cult classic Nintendo 64 characters.

In a recent tweet, Nintendo revealed that Spirits based on characters from Supergiant Games' Hades, Vanillaware's 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, and Konami's WBSC eBASEBALL: Power Pros will be available on the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Spirit Board for five days starting January 25. This comes after Pikmin 4, Splatoon 3, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Spirits were added to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate earlier this month in a surprise update.

Nintendo’s newly announced Spirits, which will reward players with more Spirit Points than usual if defeated in battle, were welcomed by gamers. Many fans of 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, specifically, were happy that the title collaborated with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. While it initially sold poorly, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim ended up exceeding the sales expectations of publisher Atlus. 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim is now considered to be among the best anime RTS games on the market, and it has even received several awards and accolades.

Crossovers between different properties are not that uncommon in the video game industry, with some of the most popular titles on the market frequently using the tactic in an attempt to constantly give players new and interesting content. Epic Games' Fortnite, one of the most played titles in 2023, recently collaborated with Family Guy, Dragon Ball, and Metal Gear Solid. Fortnite is rumored to have crossovers with the Avatar and Devil May Cry franchises in the future as well.

In addition to spirits, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate can facilitate collaborations through its playable fighters. The game already has a pretty diverse roster of fighters, but many are still hoping for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate to introduce more iconic non-Nintendo game characters such as Master Chief from Halo. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate could grow and attract a larger number of players should it ever decide to tap into other massive properties, even those that are owned by Nintendo's direct competitors like Microsoft and Sony.
