When players boot up Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, they only have eight characters to choose from, with the vast majority of the roster needing to be unlocked. This includes some of the franchise's most popular characters, like the legendary Pokemon Mewtwo, for instance, who is making his first base-game appearance in the series since Melee on the GameCube.

Unfortunately for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate players who want an easy route to unlocking Mewtwo, he seems to be one of the tougher characters to unlock in the game. Unlike with some other characters, there doesn't seem to be a known way to unlock him by completing Classic Mode under any specific conditions, and it's also unclear if there is any other secret method to unlocking him at the time of this writing.

There are two proven methods to unlocking Mewtwo in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, but both of them are very time-consuming. The first way is to keep doing matches of Versus mode, where players will unlock a new character every 10 minutes, or alternatively, every time they shut down the game, turn it back on, and complete another round of Versus. Mewtwo is one of the last characters that will unlock using this method, but he will still show up eventually.

The second proven method to unlocking Mewtwo in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is by playing the World of Light story mode. In World of Light, Mewtwo can be found in the Mysterious Dimension, and is unlocked after defeating the Wispy Woods' spirit. Unfortunately, it can take well over 20 hours for players to get that far in World of Light, meaning that this is another time-consuming method to unlocking the popular character.

Reports online have offered a third way to unlock Mewtwo, but this is far from proven and we were unable to replicate it in our own testing. Apparently, some people have had luck unlocking Mewtwo by fighting against Daisy in Vs mode. Daisy herself can be unlocked in the World of Light, by beating Classic Mode with Falco, or by using the previously outlined Vs mode method. Again, we were unable to replicate this in our own testing, but it's still worth a shot for anyone desperate to get their hands on Mewtwo.

Perhaps Super Smash Bros. Ultimate fans will find a better method to unlocking Mewtwo in the future, but for now, the ways listed here are the only options we're aware of.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is out now, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
