Super Smash Bros. has long been regarded as a celebration of video games. And although previous entries in the series had focused on Nintendo characters, making the series feel more like a celebration of Nintendo, Super Smash Bros. Brawl changed that forever with the introduction of third party characters.

With a whopping 77 character roster, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has been the entry to make many fans' dreams come true for both Nintendo and third-party dream picks alike, with additions such as the long awaited Ridley, Banjo-Kazooie, King K. Rool, and most recently, Minecraft's Steve and Alex. And while the game has brought players a plethora of long awaited characters, it seems that fans think one character who has long been rumored to appear in the series may finally be getting its chance to smash with the rest of them.

Fans of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate have begun speculating that Geno from the 1996 SNES title Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars may be joining the game's roster soon as the its next DLC fighter. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's Japanese Twitter account made a tweet yesterday announcing a new in-game tournament focusing around the some of the game's mushroom-themed items.

While a tournament focusing on mushrooms may not seem like a big deal, especially since they are heavily associated with one of Nintendo's biggest series, Super Mario Bros., it is the translation of the tweet that has had fans speculating about Geno's potential inclusion. When directly translated, fans found that the tournament event is titled "Beware of Mushrooms." This was particularly alarming to fans of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, as the game contains a popular music track titled "Beware of the Forest's Mushrooms," which also happens to be heavily associated with the character Geno.

It's worth mentioning that back in the days of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, some fans of the game datamined unused music tracks and found "Beware of the Forest's Mushrooms" in the game files, perhaps contributing to the fact that series creator Masahiro Sakurai has stated that Geno was considered for that entry in the series. Despite Geno appearing in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS in the form of a Mii costume, the character has only appeared in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a Spirit so far. Some even speculate that Geno may return as what fans have been calling a "deluxe Mii costume," being a Mii costume that looks almost exactly like the character and includes a music track, such as the Sans and Cuphead Mii costumes. While series creator Masahiro Sakurai has been known to reference other video game series in many Super Smash Bros. games, it is still unclear whether this was an intentional reference, a hint for fans, or purely coincidence.

With The Game Awards taking place this Thursday and this new in-game tournament taking place the day after, fans speculate that this may be the perfect event to tie-in with Geno's potential announcement at The Game Awards. Although some fans were speculating that Doom's Doomguy could be revealed for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate at The Game Awards since the date lines up with the anniversary of the original Doom game, it seems that only time will tell if any characters are revealed for the game at all during the highly anticipated awards show.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available now on Nintendo Switch.
