It has been well over a year since the release of the critically acclaimed Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and despite how much time has passed, the game continues to be a powerhouse for the Nintendo Switch. To celebrate its continued longevity, Nintendo has announced a brand new themed tournament for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Released back in December of 2018, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the latest installment of the widely popular Super Smash Bros. series. It's a fighting game whose roster boasts seventy-six unique fighters with five additional DLC characters. Nintendo also recently announced that there will six additional DLC fighters whose releases have yet to be specified.

Following the release of the game, Nintendo has hosted numerous online events in tandem with all of the content already included in the game. These events have taken the form of online tournaments for players to compete in and gain additional Spirits to help boost their characters. A Super Smash Bros. Melee themed tournament actually took place back in January of this year.

This new tournament's theme is the 1990s. In other words, players who participate in this tournament can only use characters that were released in the 90s, so players must choose accordingly. This includes Young Link, Cloud, Kirby, Sonic the Hedgehog, Yoshi, and many others. Players will also be limited to playing on stages that are based on games from the 90s as well.

It's nice that Nintendo has continued to provide Smash Bros. fans additional content to keep them occupied while waiting for the additional fighters to release. Not to mention the amount additional patchwork the developers have continued to do on the game since its release. Right now is probably the best time to be a fan of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

However, there has been no additional news of when fans can expect the subsequent wave of DLC fighters to be announced. Most fans are expecting Nintendo to provide some details at this years E3, but so far, nothing concrete has been announced. Though, it is sad that the next six DLC fighters will likely be the last ones added to the roster for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Nintendo will be sure to space out their releases, to build suspense among the fans, but it's still unfortunate nonetheless.
