The Game Awards 2023 have officially come and gone, complete with new game announcements, awards across the industry, and more. It'll be interesting to see how the discourse surrounding the show develops over the coming days, but it's hard not to see Baldur Gate 3's Game of the Year Award being celebrated the world over, Monster Hunter Wilds speculation lasting for months, and much, much more. Of course, many were there to see what awards their favorite games won, and many who could not tune in may be curious about how Super Mario Bros. Wonder performed.

After all, it had snagged five nominations heading into the show. Super Mario Bros. Wonder is the first 2D Mario game in 10 years, and its core premise of Wonder Flowers was exciting at reveal and in gameplay. With Super Mario Bros. Wonder having a 92 Metacritic score, many would think that it would claim a significant portion of its nominations, if not all of them. However, Super Mario Bros. Wonder only won 1 award. If nothing else, it speaks to the sheer volume of incredible games that came this year.

Every Award Super Mario Bros. Wonder Was Nominated For

  • Game of the Year
  • Best Game Direction
  • Best Art Direction
  • Best Family Game
  • Best Multiplayer Game

For context, 5 nominations is more than respectable out of Super Mario Bros. Wonder, but it was not the most for the showcase. Baldur's Gate 3 and Alan Wake 2 tied in that regard, with each having 8. Spider-Man 2 had seven total nominations, yet unfortunately did not win a single one. Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Hi-Fi-Rush, and Super Mario Bros. Wonder were all tied with 5 nominations, with the latter clinching Best Family Game.

Super Mario Wonder Wins Best Family Game at The Game Awards 2023

While Mario Wonder's GOTY, Best Game Direction, Best Art Direction, and Best Multiplayer nominations all make perfect sense, the only one it managed to clinch was Best Family Game. Fitting, given, that Nintendo's approach is mostly, if not completely, family-friendly content. Mario is something that can bring fathers and sons, adults and children, and entire families together, and that's exactly what this did.

It may be upsetting to learn that Super Mario Bros. Wonder only won 1 award, but given the sheer competition this year, it's not that surprising. And no matter what, it's still a great game just like every game nominated at the award show and many that didn't snag a single one.
