Highlights

  • Super Mario Run received a new update after 8 years.
  • Despite mixed reviews, the game remains a unique entry in the Super Mario franchise.
  • The patch notes hint at an upcoming event, but details remain scarce.

Nintendo's Super Mario Run has received a new update eight years after it first launched. Super Mario Run is the main series Super Mario game that often gets overlooked whenever fans are talking about the franchise. There are some who don't even consider it a proper Super Mario game because it has only ever been released for Android and iOS mobile devices, as opposed to a dedicated Nintendo console.

Super Mario Run stands as one of Nintendo's few efforts to break into the mobile gaming space. Instead of going with a free-to-play economy like most mobile games on the market, Super Mario Run features more a traditional distribution model, requiring players to actually purchase the game to play it. It earned mostly positive reviews, but its review scores were still considerably lower than most games in the beloved platformer franchise.

Super Mario Run is Getting Super Mario Odyssey DLC

Super Mario Run's latest crossover event lets players download Super Mario Odyssey-themed DLC until the end of the November if they log in on certain dates.

With Super Mario Run reviews failing to impress compared to its counterparts and the game being released on mobile platforms, it's really no surprise that it gets overlooked so much. But while Super Mario Run may be forgotten by many franchise fans, Nintendo itself hasn't forgotten it. Nintendo has released a new update for Super Mario Run that has "added features for an event" and provided "various bug fixes," though the patch notes are otherwise vague. However, the patch notes do seem to suggest that a new Super Mario Run event is potentially on the way, so fans may want to keep an eye out for more information on that front.

Nintendo Everything noted that Super Mario Run's last update came at the end of 2023. That update added the Wonder Flower from Super Mario Bros. Wonder to the game as part of a cross-promotional tactic. It's possible that the event mentioned in the patch notes is pointing to another Super Mario Run crossover with another Mario game, but that remains to be seen.

With Super Mario being Nintendo's flagship franchise, there are no doubt more games starring the iconic plumber on the way. 2024 will see the release of multiple Super Mario-adjacent games, including the Princess Peach: Showtime Switch exclusive on March 22, the Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door remake on May 23, and Luigi's Mansion 2 HD on June 27.

It's highly likely that there are unannounced Super Mario projects in the work as well. Rumor has it that Nintendo is making a Switch 2 console for release in 2025, and if previous Nintendo consoles are any indication, a new main series Super Mario game shouldn't be hard to find. It's just a question of whether the game will be 3D like Super Mario Odyssey or another 2D adventure akin to Mario Bros. Wonder or Super Mario Run.
