Nintendo has officially announced a remake of the beloved Super Nintendo game Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. While it decided to opt out of the Summer Game Fest events, Nintendo still hosted a special summer Nintendo Direct event to showcase some of the new games in development for the Nintendo Switch.

Prior to the Nintendo Direct, leakers suggested that a classic Super Nintendo game would be getting a remake for the Nintendo Switch. Some rumors pointed to the game being a Chrono Trigger remake, but it's now clear that the game in question was the Super Mario RPG remake.

Nintendo announced the Super Mario RPG remake with a jaw-dropping trailer that showed off the vastly improved graphics. Based on the trailer, the Super Mario RPG remake will be very faithful to the original gameplay-wise, but with a modern look and some improvements. Anyone excited to relive Super Mario RPG should note that the game is coming to the Nintendo Switch on November 17, so it's just five months away from the time of this writing. Pre-orders for the game are available starting now.

For those unfamiliar with Super Mario RPG, the game is basically a precursor to the Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi games. It employs similar turn-based gameplay, but mixed with features pulled straight from the core Super Mario series. Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars earned a great deal of critical acclaim at the time of its release in 1996, and it seems like a safe bet that the remake will enjoy a similar reception when it launches later this year.

Super Mario RPG features plenty of characters pulled straight from the Mario games, but it also some original characters as well. One of the most notable is Geno, the living puppet character with blue clothing. Fans have long wanted to see Geno added to the Super Smash Bros. roster, but that has yet to happen. Now that Super Mario RPG is getting a remake on the Nintendo Switch, fans will no doubt have their fingers crossed that this will open the door for Geno to finally make his debut on the Smash roster.

Time will tell if that will ever happen, but for now, Nintendo fans can look forward to reliving Super Mario RPG with improved graphics and gameplay when it launches exclusively for the Switch later this year.

Super Mario RPG will launch November 17, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
