When it comes to RPGs, especially turn-based RPGs, there are some common elements that can be found across numerous titles. One of these things is status effects. Status effects are often caused by attacks and abilities in combat. From Pokemon to Final Fantasy, status effects can easily ruin a players day if they do not remove them quickly.

Super Mario RPG also has status effects. While there are some that are definitely unique to this title, it does have some of the usual suspects, like poison. If players should happen to end up with a poisoned character in their party, here is how they can cure it.

What Causes Poison?

For the most part, poison is caused by certain enemy attacks. From normal attacks to special ones with names that can't be blocked, poison can come from a number of different sources. Numerous enemies throughout the game can cause poison as well. This includes enemies like Rat Funk and Buzzer. The difficulty that players choose does not increase or decrease the chances of being poisoned. Regardless of how it occurs, if a character suddenly turns purple and has little bubbles over their head that means they have been poisoned.

When a character is poisoned, they will take damage at the start of their turn. This doesn't expire, so the character that has the poison debuff will continue to take damage until they run out of HP.

How to Cure Poison

Fortunately, poison is a status effect that can easily be cured. First off, if players have any Cleansing Juice in their inventory, they can use it to remove the status effect. Of course, this doesn't make the cured character immune to poison, so if it happens again, players will need to use another Cleansing Juice. Just like all other status effects in the game, poison is automatically removed when a battle is won.

So if a character gets poisoned near the end of the fight, it is better to simply finish off the last enemy or two quickly and not waste the Cleansing Juice. There are much worse status effects in the game, so players will want to save their Cleansing Juice for those.

Can Poison Be Prevented?

If Super Mario RPG players want to spare their characters from dealing with poison, there is a way. As players progress through the game, they will come across an accessory called Antidote Pin. When equipped, this accessory prevents the character from being poisoned. Antidote Pin can be purchased at the Mushroom Kingdom item shop for 28 Coins.
