Super Mario RPG is a pretty faithful remake although there were some changes made. Besides the obvious things like the graphics and the music improving, there is a litany of battle redesigns. Characters can team up to perform specials called Triple Moves. Party members can be swapped out on the fly as well akin to Final Fantasy 10.

Furthermore, there is post-game content which is one of the biggest changes with the remake of Super Mario RPG. There is a small side quest that begins upon loading save data regarding boss rematches and that’s all that needs to be said.

7 Belome

Players have to fight Belome three times in the game, counting this post-game encounter which will kick off the whole quest. It’s challenging, to be sure, but if players are savvy enough they can trounce Belome like there is no tomorrow. Being at the max level is one good way to stay on top of things.

Players should also wear status protective accessories like the Safety Badge in Super Mario RPG. Belome is weak to Lightning making Mallow and his Shocker spell the MVPs of the match. The end reward will be the Sage Stick for Mallow which is a great weapon.

6 Punchinello

Punchinello looked like a bomb and died by a giant Bob-omb in the original SNES game. Although, apparently he survived both being stomped on and exploded to return for a rematch. This boss fight is a lot trickier to get right and may take a few swings.

See, Punchinello’s defenses are nigh-on impenetrable. The only way to damage him is by turning his Bob-ombs back at him about ten to fourteen times. Simply attack a Bob-omb and it should turn around. If these Bob-ombs hit players instead and they don’t defend right, they could die in an instant. The reward this time around will benefit Bowser. Punchinello will upgrade his Chain Chomp weapon into the Wonder Chomp which is a golden edition.

5 Booster

Booster is a huge part of the middle section of the game compared to all other villains. Given that information, it was wild that Squaresoft never put in an actual boss fight with Booster in the SNES version. That has changed in the remake and Booster even gets a cinematic intro.

Players will have to climb Booster’s Tower in Super Mario RPG to take on Booster and his three minions. Booster will not attack and will instead spend his turns trying to summon a new model train, the Engine 023, which will decimate the crew if summoned. It’s a pretty easy fight if players just keep attacking and interrupting the summoning. The prize will be a new weapon for Geno, the Stella 023.

4 Bundt

The rematch with the evil Bundt is a lot like Booster’s. The two chefs ask Mario and the others for help with their cake again because it has gone evil. It’s an odd request given that they actively fight against the party in the boss fight. All they do is try to light the cake though. If all candles are lit, that’s pretty much a Game Over because the upgraded blast will not be healthy for anyone.

Punching the Bundt will blow out candles and it’s as simple as that. Special moves in Super Mario RPG are not needed for this fight as melee attacks will suffice. The Enduring Brooch will be the prize after the conflict which will keep a character from dying once in battle.

3 Johnny

This might be one of the toughest fights in the entire game because players have to rely on a lot of luck as well as master the turn-based mechanics. Johnny will be waiting for a rematch in his ship underwater. It will be a one-on-one match, like before, except there is an extra catch. No items can be used meaning there is no way for Mario to heal.

So, every punch has to be a critical attack and every defensive maneuver has to negate damage or limit it. The rematch is going to take more than a few tries to get right along with a few prayers for good measure. Afterward, Johnny will give Mario the Extra-Shiny Stone which will lead to a rematch with Culex.

2 Jinx

This is incredibly bold for Square Enix to do to players. In the original content, players already have to fight Jinx three times to claim the ultimate prize of the Jinx Belt. So, adding another fight is wild but thankfully this rematch only has to be fought once. Also, players don’t need to focus on dealing damage to Jinx.

All they need to do is build up the gauge to perform a Triple Move in Super Mario RPG. Any Triple Move will do as Jinx only wants to see one be performed. Besides his normal attacks, Jinx will counterattack if players are bad at their attack timing, so be wary. For defeating him, the Teamwork Band accessory will be yours which will increase how much the gauge builds up over time.

1 3D Culex

Culex is the hardest boss in the original SNES version of this game. It’s not surprising given that the goal of optional bosses in most RPGs is to be brutal. In this remake, the first encounter is the same which is odd given that Culex is still pixelated when everything else in Super Mario RPG is in 3D. That’s because the developers wanted to save the surprise for the post-game.

In the rematch, Culex goes full 3D along with his accompanying Crystals of Fire, Water, Earth, and Wind. Besides hitting harder in every level, the biggest new addition to this fight is Culex’s countdown which will probably wipe out the entire party in a single blow. Thankfully the two backup reserves are available but that means players have to constantly play the revive game to stay on top of things. It is a slow burn of a boss fight for sure and the only prize at the end is the literal useless Crystal Shard. It’s there for bragging rights and that’s it.
