Square Enix, Squaresoft at the time, truly got away with metaphorical murder when they made Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. It was so goofy that it seemed impossible for Nintendo to allow these things to transpire today. That’s taking into account the spiritual RPG sequels too.

Every Companion in Super Mario RPG Explained

Mario will be joined by a cast of new and returning party members in Super Mario RPG, and each one has their own skills to aid the plumber in battle.

Not only did they have fun with the character of Mario and his series, but Squaresoft celebrated Nintendo as a whole. There were so many Easter Eggs in the game and the remake kept them all in. Here are some of the obvious and hidden ones in Super Mario RPG. There will be spoilers.

6 The Mushroom Kingdom

What Does A Princess Wear?

Samus sleeping in Super Mario RPG

There are two big Easter Eggs that players can uncover in the Mushroom Kingdom. Upon his first visit, Mario can go into Princess Peach’s room and examine the right corner of her fireplace. A prompt will pop up telling players that they found Princess Peach’s “???” which is odd. Her grandma will quickly come over to snatch it away meaning it could possibly be an undergarment.

If players wait to search that spot until after Princess Peach is in the party, she will give Mario an earful. The cooler of these two Easter Eggs can be encountered later in the game, like around the time of Seaside Town. In the guest bedroom of the castle, Samus from the Metroid series can be seen sleeping in her full Varia Suit which seems uncomfortable. She’ll tell Mario she is resting up to fight Motherbrain and that’s all.

5 Rose Town’s Hero

From Beyond Hyrule

Sleeping next to Link in Super Mario RPG

Samus is not the only sleeping hero that players can encounter from another Nintendo series. After the Forest Maze quest in Super Mario RPG, players can move on to Moleville to find another Star Piece. If players return to Rose Town after this objective and stay at the inn, players will wake up next to Link from The Legend of Zelda series.

Super Mario RPG: How to Beat Croco

Croco is the first non-tutorial boss that players will encounter in Super Mario RPG, and here is how to beat him.

Unlike Samus, Link will not say anything to Mario. He will continue to sleep although trying to talk to him will emit the classic secret jingle from his series at least. Super Mario RPG is a great game that Nintendo allowed Squaresoft to get wild with the Mario series. Just imagine how cooler things could have gotten if Samus and Link could have joined the party though.

4 Booster Tower Easter Eggs

Too Many To Name

Pixel Mario in Super Mario RPG

Booster Tower in Super Mario RPG is home to a grand majority of the Easter Eggs in the game. In the lobby, a Magitek Armor figure can be seen on the reception desk from Final Fantasy 6. Later on, there is a curtain players can go behind. When they re-emerge, Mario will be an 8-bit sprite until players try to leave.

In the final room of Booster Tower, Booster has a toy box. Inside is a figure of Samus, Rob the Robot, a car from Stunt Race FX, and the mascot for the Disk System, Diskun. Now, if players return to this room after defeating Valentina and Dodo, they can see Booster proposing to Valentina. This scene makes the end credits scene make a lot more sense, so it’s more like a necessary side piece of content than an Easter Egg,

3 Marrymore’s Hidden “Quest”

Become A Bellhop

Working as a bellhop in Super Mario RPG

There’s not much to Marrymore as a place since there is just a hotel and a church. NPCs in this area will rave about the suite, which costs 200 Gold Coins. If players can afford it, they should check in as they can get an item to increase their FP in Super Mario RPG.

Here’s the secret part. The lamp in the room is how players will turn in for the night. They can stay more than one night and if players run out of money, the owner will make them become a bellhop to work off the debt. This can lead to more FP-based items as tips from guests, so this Easter Egg or mini-quest is worth checking out.

2 The Missing Brother

Where Is Luigi?

Luigi’s Wish in Super Mario RPG

Princess Peach and Bowser make sense for party members in Super Mario RPG. However, there is a glaring exclusion as Luigi is missing who could have been great. Early beta screenshots of the original SNES game show Luigi in the background but it is unknown what role he played.

Super Mario RPG has gotten many quality-of-life changes in the remake, and saving has seen some improvements made to it.

Luigi does appear in the ending credits although his pixel-self is relatively small. The only other reference to Luigi in the game is on Star Hill. Players can find a lost wish that reads “I wanna help out my older brother, Mario.”

1 Barrel Volcano Easter Eggs

Cinder Toad’s Collection

Cinder Toad’s ship collection in Super Mario RPG

Barrel Volcano is the last location before players have to head back to Bowser’s Castle to begin the final showdown with Smithy and his men. Right before the first boss fight in Barrel Volcano, players can refresh themselves at Cinder Toad’s. He will sell players items, and equipment, and even let them heal at his inn.

In the background of his emporium are three ships. One is the Arwing from Star Fox. The other two are vehicles from F-Zero namely the Blue Flacon and Fire Stingray. Someone on the development team must have loved putting figures into all of these locations.
