Highlights

  • Seaside Town is a crucial location in Super Mario RPG for acquiring valuable accessories, like Coin Trick, EXP Booster, and Flower Ring.
  • The Jinx Belt and Attack Scarf, obtained in Monstro Town, are powerful accessories that boost attack power and stats, especially for weaker physical characters.
  • The Safety Badge and Ghost Medal are important accessories that protect against status ailments, while the Quartz Charm provides a damage reduction and an attack power boost, obtained through a challenging quest.

Super Mario RPG may look like an easy game for beginners to get into, but it is a brutal experience. The turn-based active combat makes it so players have to constantly pay attention. There is no slacking off in this adventure, which is one of the reasons why the original game was so groundbreaking on the SNES in 1996.

Every Companion in Super Mario RPG Explained

Mario will be joined by a cast of new and returning party members in Super Mario RPG, and each one has their own skills to aid the plumber in battle.

Now, like most RPGs, this remake allows characters like Mario to equip gear. Every hero can equip a weapon that is character-specific to them, like Hammers for Mario. Everyone can equip armor as well. Then, there are the accessories that grant characters skills or boost stats. Of the many in Super Mario RPG, these are the best ones to keep an eye on.

8 Coin Trick

Seaside Town

Coin Trick accessory in Super Mario RPG

Frog Coins in Super Mario RPG before Seaside Town are kind of useless. There are some things to buy, but they don’t feel that valuable. However, in Seaside Town, players can meet a young frog that will sell players accessories for Frog Coins.

One of these accessories is called Coin Trick, and it will double the coins earned in battle. Eventually, coins will become meaningless in the game, but that happens to the currency in RPGs a lot in the endgame sections.

7 EXP Booster

Seaside Town

EXP Booster accessory in Super Mario RPG

EXP Booster is another accessory that players can buy from this frog in Seaside Town. It will double the EXP earned in battle, but only for the character who equips it.

This is a great accessory to use on the two characters that aren’t in battle. For example, if the player decides that they want to play with Mario, Geno, and Mallow in Super Mario RPG, then either Princess Peach or Bowser can equip the EXP Booster. Also, players should be sure to pass the accessory around and rotate party members to create an evenly leveled team.

6 Flower Ring

Seaside Town

Flower Ring accessory in Super Mario RPG

The Flower Ring is the last accessory that players should prioritize buying from the frog in Seaside Town. This expensive piece of gear will halve ability costs, which is huge, but only for one character. For background, instead of MP like most RPG games, players use FP in Super Mario RPG, or Flower Points, to cast special skills.

Croco is the first non-tutorial boss that players will encounter in Super Mario RPG, and here is how to beat him.

There is only one way to increase FP, too, and the upgrade system is limited. So, any way that the game allows players to cast more abilities during combat without using items is a plus.

5 Jinx Belt

Monstro Town

Jinx Belt accessory in Super Mario RPG

This will be the reward for a quest that isn’t complicated, but it is challenging. Players can begin this quest in Monstro Town at the dojo at the far end. Players can challenge one of Bowser’s old soldiers before the master, Jinx, arrives.

Then, gamers will have to fight Jinx three times to get the Jinx Belt, but it will be worth it. It increases stats like attack levels and can make weaker physical characters like Mallow or Princess Peach pack a wallop.

4 Attack Scarf

Monstro Town

Attack Scarf accessory in Super Mario RPG

Attack Scarf is an even better accessory that can increase stats. The two best bumps are for attack power and speed, which will, again, help out the two weaker physical attackers of the party in Super Mario RPG.

The Attack Scarf will be rewarded by a wolf monster in Monstro Town after players meet the minimum requirement of thirty Super Jumps in a row. It’s not going to be an easy task, as timing any move in the game can be tricky. The Spiny enemies in Mushroom Way are good ones to practice on, though.

3 Safety Badge

Sunken Ship

Sometimes status elements in turn-based RPGs are not a big deal, but they are in this game. Many accessories protect against one thing, like the Antidote Pin, which will prevent the Poison status in Super Mario RPG.

Super Mario RPG: How to Save

Super Mario RPG has gotten many quality-of-life changes in the remake, and saving has seen some improvements made to it.

Those are nice to own for the party, but the Safety Badge blows them all away, as it will protect against all status ailments. There is a chest enemy in the Sunken Ship portion of the game that holds this accessory as a prize. Once it is defeated, the Safety Badge will belong to the player.

2 Ghost Medal

Monstro Town

Ghost Medal accessory in Super Mario RPG

The quest surrounding the Ghost Medal is an easy one to accomplish, technically, but without a guide, it will require a lot of backtracking. Three ghosts in Monstro Town, known punnily as The Three Musty Fears, will tell Mario that they hid flags in the world. Their cryptic clues won’t help much, but to get the ball rolling, players may want to start at Yo’ster Isle’s GOAL for one of the flags. Hopefully, players will have already unlocked this Yoshi-filled island via the Pipe Vault in Super Mario RPG.

The quest is worth it though, as the Ghost Medal offers half damage. This is not reflected in the status menu as it will not raise or lower anything. In battle, however, it works fine.

1 Quartz Charm

Monstro Town

Quartz Charm accessory in Super Mario RPG

There is a quest in the game that allows players to fight an original boss loosely based on the Final Fantasy series. Players have to acquire an item in Moleville before they can unlock Culex’s door in Monstro Town. He will fight players with four elemental crystals, meaning that he can attack five times in a single round.

It is a brutal fight, but the reward at the end will be the Quartz Charm. This accessory will halve damage like the Ghost Metal, but it has two other bonuses. It will also raise attack power by 50% and prevent mortal blows.
