The numbers are in, and it’s official: Super Mario Odyssey has become the fastest selling Mario game in the United States.

Since its announcement back in January, the hype surrounding Super Mario Odyssey grew exponentially as Nintendo gradually teased new features. Upon its launch, Odyssey was met with overwhelming critical praise, and fans were just as positive towards the game. In many circles, it’s viewed as the Nintendo Switch’s next “killer app” after The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Because of all that excitement and praise (read Game ZXC's review), it’s no surprise that Odyssey has reportedly shifted over 1.1 million copies in the U.S. in the five days since its release. That places it above New Super Mario Bros. Wii, which had held the title since 2009. Not only that, but Odyssey seems set to beat out New Super Mario Bros. Wii for monthly sales in the U.S. as well, as the latter reportedly sold just under 1.4 million copies in its entire first month on the market.

To see Odyssey smashing records that were established by a game released three years into the Wii’s console cycle not only bodes well for Odyssey, but also for the Switch as a console. Since Odyssey is exclusive to the Switch, sales figures like these only increase the strength of the console's launch year. This also means that the Switch is home to 2017’s two highest-rated games according to Metacritic (three if you count the Wii U version of Breath of the Wild).

It’ll be interesting to see how far Odyssey’s success will go, as these numbers are only taking a small portion of the world’s gaming market into account; Odyssey broke two million copies worldwide only three days after launch.

Additionally, it’s unclear whether this is solely based on physical sales or if digital is also considered. Assassin’s Creed Origins reportedly won out in the UK for physical sales over the launch weekend, but it was also released on three different platforms. Maybe Odyssey will become the highest-selling game of the year? At the very least, it seems on pace to be the best-selling console exclusive of the year, but the seems to be the limit with Super Mario Odyssey.

Super Mario Odyssey is available now, exclusively for Nintendo Switch.
