Nintendo shares its excitement with fans on Twitter as Super Mario Maker 2 passes an impressive milestone. As of September 4th, 2020, players have now uploaded more than 20 million custom courses to the Course World within the game, meaning there's literally no end to the content players can enjoy within the game. Though this news is certainly exciting, there has been something of a mixed response from fans of the game. Between the two schools of thought, there are those that praise it for its replayability and how it encourages creativity and those that decry its lack of support.
Super Mario Maker 2 released in June of 2019, meaning it took just over a year for this monumental goal to be reached. As the name implies, any player can design and create custom levels and upload them, allowing other players to go through and attempt to clear it. Over the last year there have been some truly impressive creations made within the game, but for each enjoyable map someone publishes there are countless less enjoyable levels, often called "Little Timmy" levels by fans since they appear to be designed by younger players.
Fan Response to 20 Million Super Mario Maker 2 Levels
Some fans feel only pride about the accomplishment, sharing how many levels they contributed to that 20 million or praising the game for its varied offerings. There is a consensus among these players that regardless of players' reason for uploading levels, this accomplishment goes to show that games that allow players to get creative and make things tend to be long lasting and widely enjoyed. The love players have for this game is clear, as Super Mario Maker was one of the most downloaded Switch games in 2019. Despite this, there are some caveats that should be noted.
As previously mentioned, these levels aren't heavily vetted or anything like that, and many of them could be simple or even unplayable levels that were uploaded by someone not taking it too seriously. Other fans in the comments were quick to point this fact out, claiming that although there are 20 million uploaded levels, there aren't as many well crafted ones. While exciting, this does also bring up the fact that Super Mario Maker 2 hasn't been updated since April of this year. Many fans are hoping that more content will be added to the game in celebration of this feat, but Nintendo made no such promise other than the new Ninji Speedrun being added soon.
The Future of Super Mario Maker 2
Despite not having been updated recently, the game was well supported after launch and has already added a ton of content including new power-ups and things to build with. All that said, it is understandable why some fans may be upset by the lack of support as of late. Super Mario Maker 2 still has a lot of room to grow and a great potential for expanding its player base, especially after reaching a milestone such as this. If Nintendo gives players more tools with which to create new levels, players will have a reason to stick around longer than they already have.
This is especially relevant now as Nintendo celebrates Mario's 35th anniversary. As part of that celebration, Super Mario All-Stars is bringing back classic mario games, and Nintendo is bringing a ton of new content to existing Mario games including Super Mario Maker 2. Now seems to be the perfect time for Super Mario Maker 2 to be revived by a well-timed update, prompting players to return to the game and continue to reach milestones and break records. There is a lot of love for Super Mario Maker 2, but some fans need more convincing if they're going to continue to support and enjoy it.
