Highlights

  • Super Mario Bros. Wonder offers a unique and innovative experience with solid platforming mechanics and vibrant visuals.
  • Nintendo has a track record of injecting new life into games by adding new content, as seen with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Super Mario Bros. Wonder has the potential for the same treatment, with new levels to keep players entertained for years.
  • The Wonder Flower mechanic in Super Mario Bros. Wonder can reinvent classic levels and bring them into the modern day.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder has proven to be a unique Super Mario Bros. experience, and one of the most innovative that Nintendo has produced in a long time. From the reliably solid platforming mechanics, to its vibrant and creative visuals, Super Mario Bros. Wonder has given longtime fans and newcomers alike a lot to enjoy. Given Nintendo's track record for releasing new Super Mario Bros. games, fans are also likely going to have a lot of time to get familiar with Wonder's levels and mechanics before there's another new installment.

For some Super Mario Bros. Wonder players, there will come a time when the game has offered everything it can, and replaying familiar levels will become the only option. Nintendo has demonstrated, however, that it can take a game that's seemingly been wrung of its content and inject new life into it. The Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Course Pass is a prime example of this, as amidst anticipation for Mario Kart 9, Nintendo dramatically increased the aging game's longevity. Nintendo has an opportunity to do the same with SMB Wonder, adding new levels to the game, so it can continue to entertain for years to come.

Imaginative Super Mario Bros. Wonder fans recreate one of the game's most iconic levels in another franchise entry, Super Mario Maker 2.

How Super Mario Bros. Wonder DLC Could Showcase Mario History

One of the most exciting aspects of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's Booster Course Pass was its recreation of classic Mario Kart tracks. While the base game certainly had its fair share of fan-favorites, the DLC allowed Nintendo to dig deep into its catalog while also introducing a handful of original creations. Super Mario Bros. Wonder could do the same with classic Super Mario Bros. levels, bringing them into the modern day for fans to enjoy either for the first time or the tenth. There's certainly no shortage of levels to choose from, and it can help expand SMB Wonder's sense of adventure for the foreseeable future.

SMB Wonder's Mechanics Could Reinvent Classic Levels

Super Mario Bros. has been around for a long time, and while many of its classic levels seem timeless, they can quickly show their age when compared to more contemporary creations. Super Mario Bros. Wonder's Wonder Flower mechanic, however, can help reinvent older levels and bring them into the modern day. Nintendo has already demonstrated tremendous creativity with the Wonder Flowers in the base game, and incorporating Wonder effects into classic levels from Super Mario Bros. or Super Mario Bros. 3 could make what's old new again.

Extra SMB Wonder Levels Could Add A New Challenge

In addition to bringing classic SMB levels into Wonder, DLC could add some new challenges to the game in the form of particularly difficult levels. To properly leverage the game's mechanics, such as SMB Wonder's traversal options, these could be original creations just like those in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's Booster Course Pass. Nintendo could also reach into its past and add courses from the Japanese version of Super Mario Bros. 2, which wasn't sold in the United States because it was deemed too difficult for regional audiences. Package it all with Wonder's unique art design, and it could prove to be a popular add-on.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder masterfully blends new mechanics with familiar SMB fundamentals, offering gamers who spent years playing New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe a truly unique experience. With its many playable Super Mario characters, perks, and collectibles, Wonder will likely maintain some momentum for a long time. When the time comes, however, a suite of new levels inspired by Super Mario Bros. classics could make Wonder one of the most ambitious SMB titles ever made.
