When players first boot up Super Mario Bros. Wonder, they'll be asked to choose one of the game's 12 playable characters, with plenty of familiar faces available for selection right from the get-go. In addition to the titular plumber, players will also be able to select from Luigi, Daisy, Toadette, and Nabbit, as well as two Toad variants and four colored Yoshis.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder: Welcome to the Flower Kingdom! 100% Course Guide (All Wonder Seeds & Flower Coins)

Mario Wonder players hoping to achieve 100% completion in Welcome to the Flower Kingdom! will need to find three Flower Coins and two Wonder Seeds.

Those agonizing over the decision can rest easy, as although it may not be apparent right away, it's possible to change characters in Super Mario Bros. Wonder. The process for doing so is relatively straightforward, though the game never outright explains it, which may confuse some players to begin with.

How to Change Character in Super Mario Bros. Wonder

In order to change characters in Super Mario Wonder, players should press the + button while on the Hub World screen. From here, they'll simply need to head to the Characters menu on the left, which will bring them to the character select screen from the beginning of the game. They'll be able to do this as often as they like, though they won't be able to change to a different character midway through a course.

Character Differences in Super Mario Bros. Wonder

There are two distinct groups of characters in Super Mario Bros. Wonder, the first of which is made up of Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Yellow Toad, Blue Toad, and Toadette. These characters will be able to use traditional Mario power-ups, allowing players to experience the game as the developers intended it. Unlike in some other Mario games, they all control the same, though there are some minor differences when it comes to hitboxes due to certain characters being taller than others.

The second group of characters consists of Yoshi, Red Yoshi, Yellow Yoshi, Light-Blue Yoshi, and Nabbit and serves as the game's easy mode. None of these characters can take damage, although Yoshi can be stunned temporarily. He more than makes up for this though, as in addition to being able to lick up enemies and use his iconic flutter jump, Yoshi can also be ridden by other characters, making him a great choice for multiplayer gameplay.

Nabbit is not ridable, nor can he flutter jump, but he is completely impervious to damage. This means that players controlling him can run through the stage without having to worry about enemies. The only downside is that neither Nabbit nor Yoshi can use traditional power-ups, meaning that players using them will miss out on the new Elephant transformation. They'll still experience Wonder Flower effects though, so it's not all bad.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder is available now exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
