Super Mario Bros. Wonder has revealed its full roster of playable characters, including the surprise return of a character that first appeared in 2012's New Super Mario Bros. U, Nabbit. Super Mario Bros. Wonder is the first completely new 2D Super Mario game in over a decade, and while it's dropped the "New" moniker in its title, it appears to be a natural evolution of the New Super Mario Bros. sub-series.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder retains one of the most popular features from the New Super Mario Bros. games by offering 4-player local co-op. But whereas previous games featured Mario, Luigi, and Toads as playable characters, Super Mario Bros. Wonder makes Princess Peach and Princess Daisy playable as well. Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, and Toad were all revealed in the first Super Mario Bros. Wonder trailer, but now even more playable characters have been announced.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder players will be able to choose from any of these 12 playable characters, though they will have a much different kind of experience if they play as one of the Yoshis or Nabbit. In Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Yoshi and Nabbit don't take any damage, though they can still die from falling into pits. A downside to selecting them is that none of them can use any of the Super Mario Bros. Wonder power-ups.

Even so, it may be a good idea for Super Mario Bros. Wonder players to make sure that they have a Yoshi on their team. As usual, Yoshi brings some unique abilities to the table, as it has its signature flutter jump, can grab things with its tongue, and can even be ridden by other players. This could be incredibly helpful for getting through some of Super Mario Bros. Wonder's trickier sections, as a more experienced gamer could lead their co-op partners to the end of any given course.

Super Mario games are often full of secrets, so there's a possibility that there are even more playable characters in Super Mario Bros. Wonder that have to be unlocked. However, that's just speculation at this time. Fans will have to wait for the Super Mario Bros. Wonder release date to find out for themselves.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder launches October 20, exclusively for the Switch.
