Fans of the Mario franchise will spot plenty of their favorite characters in The Super Mario Bros. Movie teaser trailer. From enemies that can be stomped on, to characters they can race against in Mario Kart. The film looks like a lot of fun, with a plethora of care.

9 Kamek

Kamek is a great enemy of Mario and the Mushroom Kingdom and acts as a paternal figure as well as a high-ranking member of Bowser’s Koopa army. Kamek is one of the few characters in the Mario universe that prominently uses magic with ease. Kamek introduces the penguins to the might of King Bowser in The Super Mario Bros. Movie trailer.

Kamek has appeared in many of the Mario games and is often featured as a Bad Luck Space in Mario Party. It seems that the gang of the Mario universe is long away from enjoying Mario Party, as Bowser and Kamek are busy collecting Power Stars.

8 Koopas

The Koopas are one of Mario’s oldest adversaries in the games. They originate from the Koopa Kingdom and have red or green shells. Mario can jump on the Koopas and make them retreat into their shell, which Mario can kick and use as a weapon. The Koopas are the most loyal armies of Bowser’s great kingdom and feature in the trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

In a unique display, The Super Mario Bros. Movie features different types of Koopas. Usually, they just have green or red shells, and now they have eyepatches and helmets. Many are curious to see if the Koopas will have speaking roles, or will just walk back and forth.

7 Bowser

King Koopa himself, Bowser, makes a roaring debut in The Super Mario Bros. Movie trailer. Bowser is the main antagonist in the Mario franchise and seems to have a bit of a problem when it comes to kidnapping Princess Peach. He’s as villainous as it gets and seeks nothing more than Princess Peach as his wife, and the Mushroom Kingdom under his claws.

Bowser can breathe fire, and use his shell for devastating attacks. Despite all his evils, Bowser has a few good acts. He’s a very good father to Bowser Jr. and gets regularly invited to Mario Party and the other Mario sports games.

6 Penguins

These adorable penguins have the might of a thousand men. They have a sense of fury that real-world penguins do not. They seek to protect their kin and kingdom from Bowser and the other Koopa soldiers and can use a vast array of weaponry, like snowballs and ice cubes.

The penguins have been enemies to Mario for a few games, and allies for others. In Super Mario 64, the penguins require Mario’s help, as one of the penguins had lost a child. In other games, they are often in Mario’s way, and Mario will die if he runs into them.

5 Penguin King

The Penguin King is the only character in the group of Penguins that seems to speak. The King bolsters a proud army and has the might of many snowballs and blocks of ice. His look is already rather iconic, as his cloak drapes over his shoulders, and his crown is as mighty as his penguin army.

This character has not yet been seen in the Mario universe and is a brand new addition thanks to The Super Mario Bros. Movie. He has a castle in the Snow Kingdom which houses a Power Star and seeks to protect it and his people from the might of Bowser and his forces.

4 Mario

A trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie wouldn’t exactly be complete without an appearance from Mario himself. Mario makes his debut in a cartoon movie, where the detail on his mustache and overalls is stunning. It seems as if this is Mario’s first time venturing into the Mushroom Kingdom, as he is in awe of all that is around him.

Mario is the titular character of the Mario franchise and has been the protagonist in all the games, as well as the primary character for Smash Bros and other Nintendo titles. He’s their flagship character, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie will bring that to cinemas.

3 Toad

Toad in The Super Mario Bros. Movie

As a humanoid mushroom, Toad is both the single and collective name of all the Mushroom people that inhabit the Mushroom Kingdom. They are a friendly and peaceful species, that are often caught under the claws of Bowser and his mighty forces. They assist Mario on his quest and are loyal servants to Princess Peach.

The Toad that interacts with Mario in The Super Mario Bros. Movie trailer may be Captain Toad, but it remains to be seen. The voices of the Toads are usually croaky and high in tone, and it’s fun to see this remains the case in The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

2 Dry Bones

These creepy and skeletal versions of the Koopas haunt the towers, castles, and forests of the Mario games. They cannot be defeated, as they are immune to Mario’s power-ups, as well as his jumps. When they are squashed, they shatter but soon reforge. When they collapse, they inevitably return to life.

In the trailer of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, the dry bones seem more like a brainless horde, as they chase Luigi into an abandoned castle through forest and fire. They are rather scary in appearance because they are skeletons.

1 Luigi

The Super Mario Bros. Movie Luigi's Mansion Sequel

The friendly divide between the Mario fandom comes from which brother is better. Fans love Mario and Luigi, with the latter being the younger and taller brother who wears green. Luigi is often seen as skittish and frightful and gets up to his adventures without his brother Mario. The Super Mario Bros. Movie trailer features Luigi running from a horde of dry bones.

Once again, it seems as if Luigi will have to fight for himself, and make his luck. It’s always fun to see Luigi embark on his adventures, and find the hero from within, and it seems as if The Super Mario Bros. Movie will feature the character doing just that.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie will hit theaters on April 7, 2023.
