Fans have come a long way from the announcement way back in 2018, and the movie is expected to release in 2023. With the trailer release, the movie is seeing a new wave of enthusiasm from Nintendo fans around the world. Some aspects, however, are hilariously confusing fans. Let's get into the best memes from the Super Mario Bros. Movie trailer release.

7 Unlike Anything You've Heard

Many fans are unhappy with Chris Pratt's rather... lackluster performance as Mario. With a bunch of video game movies cropping up, professional voice actors are increasingly pushed aside for the notoriety that celebrity can bring. This is especially bad news for fans of Charles Martinet, who has been the voice of Mario for decades at this point.

There may still be hope, as the huge backlash against the Sonic the Hedgehog movie actually got the iconic character completely redesigned for the final product. Or, could this be a marketing ploy to get people interested in the Mario movie? Only time will tell.

6 Gone, But Not Forgotten

If you've been on the internet long enough, you won't be surprised about the sheer amount of people outraged by Mario's lack of butt. Mario isn't exactly an internet sex symbol (unlike Bowser), but one has to admit, it's a pretty dramatic change. Where's the consistency, Nintendo?

Fans need not worry, though, because plenty of people in the replies have taken it upon themselves to edit Mario a spectacular new rear end. Because yes, it does feel weird seeing Mario with a butt that's not three times as large as his entire upper body.

5 My Name Is Mario

In the brief teaser trailer, Chris Pratt delivers a Mario completely unfamiliar to fans of the series. Instead of a thick Italian accent, Pratt opts for... well, basically just his voice. If one strains their ears, they might be able to detect a hint of a New York-Italian accent, but it's definitely not what fans were hoping for.

Many, however, have speculated that Charles Martinet's Mario might become grating for an entire feature length film. It's never been done before, so now, fans will never know.

4 R.I.Penguin

Illumination's decision to highlight the penguins in the teaser trailer has people reminiscing. Fans of Super Mario 64, the first 3D adventure game in the series, will remember the "Cool, Cool, Mountain" level, where Mario's task is to help the mother penguin reunite with her baby penguins.

Of course, players also had the option to drop the baby penguin off the side of the cliff, which has been a subject of Mario meme culture for decades. Perhaps these wronged baby penguins have come back for revenge!

3 Ups And Downs

Jack Black seems to have fully embraced the role of Bowser, and fans are absolutely loving it. Jack Black has already got quite a few animated movie roles under his belt, like Kung Fu Panda, Shark Tale, and Ice Age. Demonstrating his commitment, he even turned up to New York Comic-Con sporting a shell backpack and dyed orange beard in anticipation of the role.

As much as the internet hates Chris Pratt's Mario, they love Jack Black's Bowser. Fans can just hear him having fun with the role in the trailer, which adds a lot of live to the series' main antagonist.

2 A Journey Of Self Discovery

The original Super Mario Galaxy meme is an absolute classic. For those not in the know, the Super Mario Galaxy logo intermittently sparkles (in line with its galaxy theme) on certain letters spelling out 'U R MR GAY'.

Fast-forward to 2022, it appears the Mario logo has done some thinking. Now, the Super Mario Bros. Movie sparkles on letters spelling out 'U R MR BI'. Congratulations, Mario logo! It's unlikely that this is a deliberate reference to the original meme, but it's certainly a happy coincidence!

1 Some Positivity

With all the negativity surrounding the release of the Super Mario Bros. Movie, it can be easy to forget that people are, as a whole, very excited to see an animated Mario movie. Just like this little cat! After all, the closest we have right now is the 1993 live-action starring Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo.

Even if fans aren't stoked about the casting of Chris Pratt, the Mario movie is sure to put a smile on a lot of faces. Kids will be thrilled to see their favorite plumber-turned-adventurer hit the big screens, and long-time fans are sure to find something to love.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie releases in the United States on April 7, 2023.
